Starting about the end of May, beginning of June, all types of media - print, TV, internet, your friend's mouth - start the yearly ritual of making suggestions for Summer Reading. I understand this on one level, and then again I don't. Living in a northerly climate, once it gets to be real summer, most of us get real busy. It's the time we can finally be OUTSIDE, doing THINGS. Gardening, painting, riding, walking, running. All those things you wanted to do or get done in c... MORE
Dear God, what a thing of beauty this song is. I've been freaking out in general about Portastatic's newest one for a few weeks now (since around the time we played together to a cavernous room in Greensboro, in fact), but this song has it all... ersatz Latin guitar plucking, a string arrangement that Van Dyke Parks would be envious of, guiros and finger snaps, and some Tweedy-esque guitar acrobatics. It's really a very strange song - the first few times I heard it I did... MORE
Heh -- got the new Portastatic in the mail today. Since I ordered it direct from the label, it came with some extras, including a second separate disc of demos and curios. Anyway, the Internet music database thing didn't recognize the second disc (entitled Some Small Things You Can't Defend), so I had to enter all the track info when I ripped it. (Yep, a little fantasy of mine). ... MORE
Cloudy day, with - according to the wife - "400 percent humidity." I should be writing some catalog copy for a client right now, but the idea of writing about school furnitures isn't all that appealing at the moment. In lieu of that, I should be working on our front walk, which had a small sinking thing going on when we bought the house a few months ago and which has grown steadily worse since. I pulled out about 25 bricks and poked around at it yesterday -- there's a ... MORE
I was listening to this album at work yesterday and it wasn't until just now that I noticed the lyrics in part of the chorus are "you fuckers make that impossible to say". I have a job in the retail world where I'm constantly dealing with customers. haha.
Anywhoo...this album is one of my favs from this year. Mac just continues to make great album after great album.
