Prior to leaving the U.K. and taking up residency in New York as a member of Tony Williams’ “Lifetime”, John McLaughlin had mostly been an aspiring session guitarist. His credits included stints with familiar names like David Bowie, Georgie Fame, Graham Bond and the Rolling Stones (!), as well as less familiar ones – Duffy Power, Herbie Goin and Howard Blake. I’ve heard some of these recordings and there’s nothing terribly special there that I want to include in this series... MORE

Most people, even people like me who don't have a lot of jazz knowledge, would say Miles Davis was brilliant. "Kind of Blue" is one of the most expressive albums you'll ever hear in any genre, and I think you could reach that conclusion even if you'd never heard a jazz record before.
Davis was also a bit of an ass. He wasn't known as the friendliest dude -- I've heard stories about how he would play whole shows with his back to the audience because he didn't respect his ... MORE

Miles Davis piece "Spanish Key" from his "Bitches Brew" album was the first jazz performance I heard that I loved so much that I tried to memorize every phrase in it. This video shows Miles's trumpet solo from a live performance in Antibes four weeks before "Bitches Brew" was recorded. Miles solo is worthy of memorization but the band is playing much faster than on the sudio recording. Chick Corea is already feeding Miles electric piano comping ideas that will be im... MORE

The great bands that Miles Davis led, especially this one and the earlier quintet and sextet with John Coltrane, had the audacity and skilll to create a unique setting and mood for every soloist in a performance. You can really hear that here in this performance of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints". The rhythm section, and especially drummer Tony Williams, carry on a high velocity, intense conversation with Miles during his solo. Tony is putting on a spectacular fireworks s... MORE

Unbelieveable what shows up now that there are video sites available like YouTube and Daily Motion. Just found a performance by Wayne Shorter with a European rhythm section at the Molde Jazz Festival in 1966. I wonder if this was a one-time band hired for the occasion or if they toured. I don't recognize any of those musicians, but the playing is very good. I've never seen video of Wayne playing this tune, but it was frequently played by the Miles Davis Quintet... MORE

On September 28, 2006, I was privileged to be invited to attend the induction into Hollywood's Rockwalk for Miles Davis. My friend Vince Wilburn, Jr. invited me to attend with a large group of Miles Davis' family and friends. His father Vince Sr., Cheryl Davis, and many others were with us to celebrate the event. The night before I installed a new ProJect experience2 turntable into Vince's HiFi rig in his home. The system was the personal music system of Miles Davis and ... MORE

Vince was in town for a couple of days before the release with his father Vince, Sr. They came up to Scottsdale to listen to the new disc on Innovative Consulting and Marketing's top Meridian system. It comes in at about $100K just for the audio section. It is very revealing and brutally dynamic. Vince Sr. is the coolest cat I have ever met (I never met Miles in person, only in his virtual musical world). Remember that story from the RockWalk trip post, about listening to So ... MORE

Vince Wilburn, Jr. shared with me some greatness nd I wanted to share it with you all. Sony BMG Music Entertainment released this E.P. on their Legacy label on August 21, Vince let me in on it early, Thanks Vince. ..........from the jacket of the pre-release copy of the latest Miles Davis Album (quiet, it's still an album to me): Evolution. Revolution. Miles Davis: Today.

Rhapsody has finally started working for me again (long story, excellent idea for a service, not always well-implemented), so I can start playing with the new MOG . I have nothing but first impressions, but they are very good. I am already a Rhapsody subscriber, so my experience will differ from those who are just encountering Rhapsody. So far, this tag team seems to deliver as promised. The MOG side of the pairing works just fine ... I went to my Recommendations page... MORE

It really is a cliche: "Kind Of Blue" is the best music album ever. Not best jazz or instrumental album, is the best MUSIC album ever produced. It would be my choice if I only had to live with one album for the rest of my life. A full mosaic of deep emotions and feelings, "Kind Of Blue" is perfect when you feel sad, happy, upbeat, downbeat, creative, introspective, kinky, you name it, is the perfect soundtrack for most everyday life situations. It is incredible to know... MORE
