I must be slowing down in my old age. It's become way harder for me to keep tabs on what the kids are listening to these days... even in the advent of all these helpful music networking sites!
A friend of mine casually mentioned that I should listen to Menomena's "Friend and Foe" (if I hadn't already), and sure enough I had not. At first none of the songs really grabbed me... then I latched onto "Muscle'n Flo," which rocks some KILLER drums, and an oh-so-perfect organ bridg... MORE

As some of you know I'm from (near) Portland and in my younger days I'd see many a show downtown and had about a B- in Hipster Studies based on the amount of time I spent in record stores and how many one inch buttons I had on my messenger bag. I wasn't totally suburban but yet I also didn't weigh 81lbs and have a fashionable alternative hairstyle and fashionable punk-inspired thrift-store clothes or smoke clove cigarettes with my Pabst Blue Ribbon. If anyone caught Menomena @ the South Street Seaport of Friday, I am sure you can say it was a wonderful night. Free concert great show, beer, and a fun crowd.
They have free shows there every Friday, perfect for happy hour.

I just saw Menomena in Dallas last Thursday at the Granada Theater. I was afraid they wouldn't be able to replicate the sound on their cd, but I was surprised. Even though some of the sound is from a laptop, these 3 knew how to bring the house down. Switching between bass and keyboards, sax and lead guitar, 2 of the 3 kept a fervent pace.
