I had the pleasure of seeing Kid Koala, DJ Shadow, and Cut Chemist in Minneapolis on Monday evening. Sets from all the DJs were great.
I respect the broad-ranging musical taste of all the DJs - there was definitely something for everyone in the mix. Shadow obviously had an impressive stack of 45s. There were four turntables to each DJ. Kid Koala opened and DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist presented their "Hard Sell" installment. I'm not gonna lie; I prefer their "Brainfreeze"... MORE

I just received this message from Kid Koala to music fans in the London area. The Kid has agreed to be the special guest at an upcoming DJ series in London, and wanted to share the good news, so I am passing it along to you since I, alas, am nowhere near the UK...
San Miguel are hosting a series of intimate events entitled Hidden Depths, which aim to target people who like to look that little bit further. These events will feature one-off collaborations, special guests

Having posted about Los Campesinos I realised a connection to another classic live moment. The Los Camp's video is animated by Monkmus who has also done videos for the most amazing Kid Koala (search youtube for Fender Bender and Basin Street Blues to see what I'm on about. I could link but you'll get more out of it if you do the work yourself). Anyway, one of the best live gigs I've been to in the last few years was Kid Koala in Bristol. It won out for sheer charm and st... MORE

I went to London today, and goodness knows I really really don't like it.
I'll tell you what I do like however. Getting given belated birthday/Christmas presents in cheque form. Yes, I now am able to prolly buy myself RAM /wirless router etc/new tft monitor. How much that will rock. I also listened to a lot of hilarious turntablism (that really is a musical genre!)
stuff like Chucky steel, and concentric (I think it was him I listened to), kid koala etc. Very entertai... MORE

I've been very busy, you see, for a very long time. It's been almost a year now that I've been working from the time I wake up until the time I sleep, at least five days a week and occasionally seven.
But slowly, slowly, my humanity is returning. A bit of stability is creeping back into my life. And while I'll never be fully carefree again, I am happy. I sleep all the way through, almost every night! I have time for phone calls and the occasional night out, wallet permit... MORE

Actually just half of the real song. I listen to this DJ's album from time to time. Very inventive with almost no songs that are mainstream catchy. Just a lot a quirky sound effect records mixed and scratched... I think MTV showed this video exactly one time. I'm shocked someone actually taped and kept it.... MORE

"I was never able to sing, I was never able to write songs. But I always got a kick out of piecing together stories with bits of records."
Eric San aka Kid Koala is a one-of-a-kind sort of turntablist. There's the fact that he's an illustrator, graphic artist, film maker, puppet master and musician. There's the fact that he always wear shorts. Then there's the fact that he sees his chosen means of expression not as a way of showing that he can do faster crabs than anyone... MORE
