A WOOF IN CROONER'S CLOTHING

Artist:
Album: Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues
Track: *I Wanna Be Around

Blog post image preview Anyone familiar with John Cale's _ouevre_ will be surprised by this track. I like John Cale, his music is usually dark and dense, with subject matter to match. Lou Reed has had his moments, but my favorite Velvet Underground alum is definitely J. C.His Paris 1999 (live) is a must have in any collection of Dark rock n roll. So I was surprised when I heard him doin' this, he sounds like an old school crooner, with a lot of Sinatra, some Bobby Darin, even echoes of Der B... MORE

Blog post image preview Speaking of the Beach Boys, this is a song dedicated to Brian Wilson by one of my favourite artists, John Cale.  He has brilliantly captured the California sound made famous by the Boys and the lyrics perfectly conjure the image of a Welshman pining for the surf, sand and sun of a distant land. This is definitely a candidate for my list of Desert Island discs.  Great stuff!

If John Cale's 1970 debut solo album does not constitute as a forgotten masterpiece, than I don't know what does. Vintage Violence is the sound of John Cale rejecting the avant-garde stylings of his work with The Velvet Underground (for the most part). This is John Cale sitting down and writing pop songs. Incredible pop songs. This is no understatement. The albums busts out of the gate with the grooving “Hello, There", led by Cale's driving piano. I must give credit to t... MORE

Leonard Cohen's masterpiece is my favorite song of all time. I know people are crazy over Jeff Buckley's version, and Rufus Wainwright's also has many fans. While I appreciate both of the aforementioned versions of this song, my absolute favorite is this one, by John Cale. I enjoy John in all of his forms - the man is brilliantly idiosyncratic and eclectic, and each album is drastically different from the last. His cover of "Hallelujah" takes the cake, though -- someth... MORE
