Listen to the song on last.fm Great Lake Swimmers MySpace I just can't get enough of these guys. They've got that sound I'm always searching for: mellow vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica and banjo. They've completely captivated me. Do me a favor and allow yourself the guilty pleasure of melting away to another place when you listen to these guys. It's been raining all day where I am, hence the song of the day pick. Enjoy and cheers to Monday finally co... MORE

What is this MOG business all about? How do I get people to trust me? Is this going to be something I become obsessed over and check constantly? Hahaha. I hope not. =o)
Though I think it's a great music community network. Woohoo!

been out of the loop, been far far from a computer, been sleeping in and staying up late been seeing excellent shows in the nitetime but then, received a lil' presey in the mail - what was it? well, my friends, it was a delightful mog t-shirt and this is how i came to be a walking ad, so i took a picture of myself at night.
There are the sounds that do more to evince quiet than simple quiet itself, songs that steal emerging stillness from the late-latest parts of day.
It's a voice and a guitar that came out here to search the dimming landscape, to recover things obscured, and me, tonight? I came here to sleep in the backseat.
1. It was rad! 2. Opener Clay George is a fox in the way that Caetano Veloso is a fox. By which I mean a silver fox who wears a classy suit. (Also he plays lovely alt-country ballads.) 3. Second opener Great Aunt Ida started with the songs I suggested in my MOG post. Point for me? 4. Great Lake Swimmers are charismatic! The singer radiates folky poetry about brothers and daughters and peace, but in a way that makes him seem strong. Point for HIM. 5. They are m... MORE
I picked up a GLS song from the 2006 SxSW torrent, and liked this particular song. I tried to see them that same year at a crappy 6th street bar at 5:00 in the afternoon - not the best time for a quiet alt-folk band... But, just getting home from an SF show and heard this song live. Tony Dekker, the singer and songwriter of the band, has this unbelievable and haunting voice. My point is, for the $12 it cost me, I got a lot of value for my entertainment dollar. Go out a... MORE
I just picked up Ongiara, by the Great Lake Swimmers today. Haven't listened to the whole album, but the first song sticks out. I'll let it speak for itself.
What's a good band name? I've discussed this a little with some friends, and haven't come up with a name I like a whole lot. I think it's tough to stand up to the repetition. Clever names suffer from the Be Sharps syndrome. Books, movies, and even albums don't seem to have this problem, perhaps because they have a theme to work off of. If clever's out, what's left? Maybe being informative. I like bands who let me know who they are, like Rage Against the Machine, P... MORE
