New Discovery - Grand Archives

(1)
The other day I was in a music store in my (adopted) home town of Melbourne with friend, and fellow mogger, t-bird browsing the shelves aimlessly looking for something nice to listen to. It seems that whenever visiting such a store I can't resist but to buy at least one thing I've no knowledge of - although this is a trait that has come to me through t-bird, it's one that I am starting to like. This technique of discovering new music has it's benifits and negatives, but at... MORE

I went to see Grand Archives last night and was kind of blown away by how their already very pretty songs opened up on the live stage. It also proved, beyond doubt, that 2008 is the year of high male harmonies, as Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and Grand Archives all build their sound, to some extent, on falsetto in close thirds. Grand Archives is based more in a 1970s pop aesthetic...If I say that they remind me, at times, of America, Seals & Croft and Nilsson, you'll just hav... MORE

It was another fun Noise Pop here in the sunny Bay Area. Over the week I was able to check out Grand Archives at Amoeba, then saw them again at the Independent the following night. They are strong and have a good future ahead....singer/guitarist formerly of Band of Horses, who we can't get enough of in this house. Kelley Stoltz blew me out of the water. His backing band was sick and he is off the charts talented. David Byrne meets Tom Waits with some Dylan and swing an... MORE

Blog post image preview There's not much I love more than browsing in a record store, mind set on buying something, whatever, even if ones choice and judgement is based purely on an artist or bands witty/quirky selection of name, track listing or cover-art. For a student with little scratch to add well-researched sure bet winners to a collection alone- it's a bad habit but oh such a fun one too that's provided, luckily, more hits than misses. So on this wet Autumn Melbourne day another session ... MORE

THE GRAND ARCHIVES
So sometimes you find a song that just speaks to you, when you are bored to death with the rest of the album.
The Grand Archives are all sorts of hype and I see why they get some props, but for the most part this album puts me to sleep. Their beards are also getting old. Real old.
However, The Crime Window, with it's fancy horns and sing song chorus, I just can't help but post it. Check this....like they took a shot of Andrew WK or something.
P.S. I know... MORE

Blog post image preview When I began listening to a few songs from a band I found on Stereogum, I immediately recognized the voice of the lead singer, but couldn't put my finger on it till I looked them up: Mat Brooke from Band of Horses! Turns out he left the band and began a new band known as Grand Archives (www.myspace.com/grandarchives) that he sings and writes just as beautifully as he did in Band of Horses. I'm extremely excited to get to know this band better and hopefully see them live (... MORE
