The other day I was in a music store in my (adopted) home town of Melbourne with friend, and fellow mogger, t-bird browsing the shelves aimlessly looking for something nice to listen to. I went to see Grand Archives last night and was kind of blown away by how their already very pretty songs opened up on the live stage. It also proved, beyond doubt, that 2008 is the year of high male harmonies, as Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and Grand Archives all build their sound, to some extent, on falsetto in close thirds. Grand Archives is based more in a 1970s pop aesthetic...If I say that they remind me, at times, of America, Seals & Croft and Nilsson, you'll just hav... MORE
It was another fun Noise Pop here in the sunny Bay Area. Over the week I was able to check out Grand Archives at Amoeba, then saw them again at the Independent the following night. They are strong and have a good future ahead....singer/guitarist formerly of Band of Horses, who we can't get enough of in this house. Kelley Stoltz blew me out of the water. So sometimes you find a song that just speaks to you, when you are bored to death with the rest of the album.
The Grand Archives are all sorts of hype and I see why they get some props, but for the most part this album puts me to sleep. Their beards are also getting old. Real old.
However, The Crime Window, with it's fancy horns and sing song chorus, I just can't help but post it. Check this....like they took a shot of Andrew WK or something.
