So here goes: MY FIRST MOG! Given such an auspicious occasion as this, I thought it fitting to reflect on the site itself and some other big issues. My thought is nothing new: internet-listening marks a major change in the way we find and understand and listen to music. But I think it's interesting that people don't look into some of the other factors that have played into the prominence of the internet in much of our listening. The biggest factor I think is corporate... MORE

Hey y'all...

NEED YOUR HELP !!

Next Saturday we have a MOGgathering that is happening in Philly & we have two options - hopefully ;) Option 1: Aesop Rock (indie hip hop) $15. Option 2: Elvis Costello (if you don't know - you don't get a vote) ;) $25 for lawn seats Now it may seem like _2*_ is the easy choice, but I wanted to get *MOG's thoughts. I think either show will be stellar. _Henry:_ I've already counted your vote for Elvis... you're off the hook... bu... MORE

Tales from Deckland

(6)
My hands are a wreck and my painting clothes have to be retired, permanetly, as hazmat gear. I have been staining a gazillion linear feet of redwood for our backyard trellis, and it will FINALLY be compleated on Monday. Upside - Satisfaction in job well done, Listening to my music at earsplitting levels and getting this crappy project done. Downside - Fumes, Mess, Stain on, Stain off, Stain on, Stain off. Major Downside - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. I don't know... MORE

Is This (This Is) Country?

Artist:
Album: Almost Blue
Track: Why Don't You Love Me(Like You Used To Do)?
(27)
Blog post image preview As a young man, I abhorred country music. Sure, I'd sneak a peek at Hee Haw for the daisy dukes crew, but for the most part I equated it with the interminable vacation travels when Dad would crank the twang and forbid us kids from even cracking the windows in the air conditioned yet thick smoke filled pontiac station wagon. Then, as the seventies crept to the decades end, my idol of the day did the unthinkable. Elvis Costello released "Almost Blue" in an apparent attempt... MORE

No.481 Elvis Costello - Armed Forces (1979)

Artist:
Album: Armed Forces: Deluxe Edition
(44)
Blank (8)
Blog post image preview No:481 ELVIS COSTELLO - ARMED FORCES (1979) One of five Costello albums in my countdown, "Armed Forces" is the album that really broke his career into the mainstream. It's the album which, in my opinion has the greatest input from The Attractions, particularly Keyboardist Steve Naive who contributes some masterful embellishments. It includes two outstanding singles, "Oliver's Army", which Elvis would later admit borrows from Abba's "Dancing Queen", and my personal favour... MORE

The la la/na na/hey! playlist.

Sometime at the end of last week, I put together a playlist of songs that contain la, na, or hey. To tell the truth, the "hey" criterion is really carte blanche to fill the list with favorites, and I set a 80-minute time limit to encourage creativity and hard decisions. Here's what I've got: Hey Ho, Lets Go (The Ramones)Hush (Deep Purple) Hey Now Now (The cloud room)get the cool shoe shine (gorillaz)Hey girl ... MORE

I was lucky enough to see Elvis Costello and the Attractions at the Paramount theater in Seattle a couple of years back. He did about two and a half hours of songs, including Goon Squad, one of my favorites. A high point for me was when he sang a song ( I can't remember which now!) a cappella and without a mic. He was directly vibrating my ears and it was awesome. After the concert I waited to meet him at the back door and he came out and talked to the 40-50 fans there i... MORE
