Doc Watson seems to know every tune that has sounded in his part of Appalachia. I think this ballad is the most beautiful song of all that he's done.
From WMVY "For the first time ever, you can hear ALL of Merlefest, Live, on the web. For years, the campus station WSIF has carried a feed from the Watson Stage, and this year, mvyradio is helping stream WSIF. Go to www.RadioFreeMerlefest.org and you’ll be able to hear main stage performances, live, all weekend long." In the early dark hours of October 23, 1985, just days before 'Frets Magazine' named him the best finger-picking guitarist of the year in folk, blues, ... MORE
As long as I am on the country-ish flavor I could not resist this one. Doc Watson is a master at his craft and I really look up to him as a guitar player. This song though, really does not showcase his playing. It is such a peculiar song to me. It sounds as if he should be singing about skipping through sun-drenched wheat fields. I mean it has such an upbeat feel to it, but listen to the lyrics. Dark as hell. I think that contrast makes it great.
Enjoy it if you dare - however, Beware!
Obviously I have an addiction. Simply put - of all the musical genres listened to during 53 revolutions around the sun...I need professional help to kick this one. Jazz, blues, rock - bluegrass lends itself to all.
