MP3: Deerhoof - Offend Maggie
Very excited for this one: the new Deerhoof record "Offend Maggie" drops in the States October 7th from Kill Rock Stars. Today the blog family has been passing the title track around our dinner table and boy is it delicious! It's a quickie and starts off with some pretty sweet acoustic guitar work before exploding into the charm and sophistication we've come to love from the 'Hoof. It's one and done and a great way to up... MORE

Deerhoof is definitely an acquired taste. Their icy crystal fragility is spiked with sharp edges and hidden hooks. This track from their 2005 release, The Runners Four is typical only in that its atypical. You cannot approach this band with your expectations.

No, this isn't a tribute to my time as a Prince impersonator, it's a spot about the new Deerhoof album "Offend Maggie", out on ATP on 6th October. I've never really explored the band too much TBH, which on listening to their latest leads me to think is a massive mistake.
Do: Grab if you're a fan of angular experimental alternative rock.
Don't: Grab if you're not.
This should help make up your mind.

Walking into the 40 Watt on Halloween amid throngs of blood-plastered faces and ingeniously-engineered DIY costumes, I immediately recognized that, whether I liked it or not, I would be judging Deerhoof's performance largely on their collective Halloween spirit and attention to costume. So when the band strolled out in mammoth, teetering carnivorous cat masks, excepting drummer Greg Saunier as the lone rodent in a mouse costume that was quickly drenched in sw... MORE
