Hip-O re-chisels some stone rock 'n' roll tablets with Bo Diddley's first 36 masters for Chess, augmented with 12 alternate takes. Like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis and the Everly Brothers' early works, you can hear Diddley transforming his roots into the newly christened rock 'n' roll. In Diddley's case both the rhythm and blues stay close at hand, and his inventions can be heard throughout the next 50 years of rock music. Listening through the masters in chronological... MORE

I just was reading emscee's post about Bo Diddley's heart attack and I thought I'd dedicate this one to him. He's one of the greats that hasn't gotten a post on my mog yet. Heres to Bo! Hope he gets well soon!

I just read about Bo Diddley being hospitalized after a heart attack. The last time I saw Bo Diddley play, it was on a cloudy, humid day at Randall's Island in NYC a couple of summers ago. It was a day of garage-rock organized by Steve Van Zandt, and the line-up included the New York Dolls, Nancy Sinatra, The Pretty Things, The Raveonettes. Bo was movin' kinda slow; he was seated through most of his set, but he was confident and commanding, and you could hear how the m... MORE

The blues legend apparently did not sustain any long-term physical damage, but is still having trouble speaking. No one (well it is MOG , so probably someone) will argue that Bo Diddley is in the pantheon of Rock and Roll, and you can't argue about Chess Records status as one of the most influential record labels of all time. But you don't necessairily think of Bo Didley sides on Chess records that are funky, and you probably couldn't think of a scenario where Bo Diddley would cover a Odetta song and have it be funky enough to fuel a hip hop classic.
If you thought real hard though, t... MORE
