MTV News in the UK caught up with Gruff Rhys (Neon Neon and Super Furry Animals) at the Mercury Prize Nominations Announcement ceremony and asked him about the incident between John Lydon and Kele Okereke. Rhys was present when the Sex Pistols frontman allegedly attacked the Bloc Party frontman. (Previously reported on MOG here.) Rhys told MTV:
"It was horrific. Kele is a very brave man and what he said is exactly what happened."Interesting. I bet none of yo... MORE
Gordon Moakes bassist of the English group, Bloc Party announced he's quit his band, but just for a bit. Moakes explains he has to take time off to help rear the awaited youngin'. "Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to join the boys during the next month or so of touring," he explained. "The reason for this is that my wife is expecting our first baby in a few weeks and after some long hard thinking we all decided, band included, that it was a bit silly for me to b... MORE
Last week people were pissed after following a ticking countdown on the Bloc Party Web site, with only to reveal a new single being played on Zane Lowe's BBC One Radio show. Perhaps they were expecting a free show or an autographed Kele guitar? Whatever expections weren't met, probably still aren't but Bloc Party went ahead and released an official video, directed by Ace Norton, for the track, titled "Mercury." Not their best work, but who doesn't love to monkey around? ... MORE
So Bloc Party have released a new 'single' from an as yet unfinished album. The tune's called Mercury and if you head on over to their website you can check out both the song and its crazy B grade sci-fi film clip. Releasing a single before the recording of an album is even finished, sends a flutter of tiny warning bells through my feeble brain. It smells a little of record label heads wanting artists to maintain their profiles between albums, you know? Or mabe they're... MORE
I probably listened to more music than ever this year, owing to a combination of factors. Great work, great connections, great friends, etc. Some of the songs themselves were even great. Anyhow, I'll post my top albums list soon, but in typical fashion here's the list of my favourite singles of 2007:
10: Amy Winehouse - Back To BlackI listened to this album on and off throughout the year, but it wasn't until the dying weeks of 2007 when the weather turned quite dreary that... MORE

Well, that was much better. Back at the Manchester Central, which Bloc Party front-man Kele Okereke accurately described as both “an old train station” and “an empty air craft hanger”, the crowd were much better last night, with only a few flying cups of piss in the air, none of which (thankfully) got me. Support came from Foals – a type of math rock, dance punk and funk hybrid – who were a lot tighter and just plain better than when I saw them earlier in the year.... MORE
My favorite indie-Britrock album ever, hands down, is "Silent Alarm" by Bloc Party. It's my appropriate work soundtrack when life gets "worse than loopy" and needs the right song. The best track on there was the U.S. bonus track "Little Thoughts" [which is not only my favorite Bloc Party song but also my #3 favorite song of all time]. But another gem is from the "Little Thoughts" EP, and it's my #2 favorite Bloc Party song. Originally I heard the Minotuar Shock Remix a... MORE
