BIG BLACK were born in 1982, instigated by Steve Albini, then a Sophomore at Northwestern University, a fanzine writer and a loudmouth. can't do punk wars without Mr Albini... this was filmed at Leeds Polytechnic, their last ever show... we (DUSTdevils), had the honor of opening up for them that night... they blew us away... i am quite visible at the front of the audience, from about the 43 second point...

[ This is taken from a messageboard post I made last night after not sleeping for almost 36 hours so it's not my best work.. but you'll get the jist ] big black played racer x and dead billy. they were underpracticed and playing off cheat sheets, but i thought it was great.shellac was my favorite set of the show. there were so many people watching them it was surreal. a prayer to god. it would have been cool to hear wingwalker... but i seriously couldn't complain abo... Blast First was a great label from the late 80's, started pretty much to give a UK release to Sonic Youth's Bad Moon Rising. It went on to be the UK home for a whole load of great, mostly American, bands including Sonic Youth, Big Black, Dinosaur Jr. and UT. You can find a few Peel Sessions and some rarer EPs from some of the Blast First bands here. Enjoy!
What's a good Big Black album to start out with?
I'm seeing them on lots of mogs I seem to mesh with and I don't know where to start. Proto-industrial with Steve Albini sounds like it should be good.
