lately i have been absolutely enamored with Beirut. they just make you feel like dancing...or learning to play a new instrument. either way, zach condon's voice never ceases to blow me away. instead of trying to come up with deeply profound lyrics, he uses his voice as just another instrument for making beautiful sounds; much like sigur ros.

I am just loving Beirut right now, absolutely blown away. Its the same feeling of beauty, chances and possibilities in music that I felt when I first heard other artists that inspire me such as Sufjan Stevens and Jackson Jackson. Its so refreshing to hear something that wakes you up from the insipid and cliched the way that this did.... MORE

I have been blown away by this hauntingly beautiful disc. I'd rather not try to explain how amazing this album is. I figure the music speaks better for itself

Thank you to everyone who commented! I especailly loved the video Hammerogod! So I was racking my brian for a song that mentioned strumpets and the only one I've been able to come up with is (oddly enough) a Disney song. Topsy Turvy from the Hunchback of Notre Dame contains the line: "Join the bums and thieves and strumpets
Streaming in from Chartres to Calais" Now on to Trumpets. So I kind of lied when I said this would be about trumpets. Well it is... MORE

The mellow and worldly sounds of Beirut is heading around the world. The Zach Condon-heade ensemble kicks things off next month in Sydney, Australia. Come May Condon and Co. will play a few west coast US dates around their slot at Sasquatch! After that the band will do as most bands do in the summer and head to Europe.

Beirut appeared on the Black Sessions (live broadcasts on French radio station France Inter) back in Nov 07.
If you have not heard, get your hands on this. Superb! Or as the French would say, Superbe!

Beirut, the pet project of 22 year old Zach Condon, has taken over my life. Again. For the third time. It's got to be the dusty Balkan gypsy horns and the lilting, percussive strumming of the mandolin. It transports me to another age; sometimes it's a sleepy smoky village in the south of France, other times it's a brasserie in Brooklyn. It's transcendence at its least and transformance at its best.
I wake up in the morning and I'm humming "Postcards From Italy"... MORE

Honestly beirut is my first introduction to balkan music. But Zach Condon manages to translate their music into gorgeous pop that a wider audience can not only accept but love. I saw beirut play in october and it was mindblowing!! Their music is so powerful that it was surreal to stand their and watch it being played. Anyways here are some pictures.
The last pic always make me laugh.

In my little circles, Beirut is pretty hip at the moment. "The Flying Club Cup" is a pretty great album, but it didn't grab me as much as it's grabbed many of my friends, and it wasn't until I saw this video that I realized why. There's a dvd, available here which takes every song on The Flying Club Cup and records its performance in random locations around new york- an apartment, a church, the street, etc. The great part about this, though, is that all the songs we... I went to see Beirut perform at the Roundhouse in Camden, London, last Saturday. The crowd were swaying from side to side and the trumpets were roaring through the venue. It was brilliant. They didn't, however, play this song.
