Forgive me in advance if this gets a little...well gets a little out there...in the ether.
I was driving home tonight without my glasses (my eyesight isn't TOO bad but i should probably still wear glasses to drive) and i was listening to the Akron/Family album Love is Simple, and it struck me as something hypnotically human.
I, like most of you, am a serious music listener. I take things apart, lyrically, technically, and experientially. I think about the masteri... MORE

So I've got a co-worker who has fairly similar musical tastes with me - I think I veer out into the harder end of the spectrum farther than he does, but we share a lot of good music between us.
Co-worker was kind enough to share with me a disc of some stuff one of his friends put together for him, and man there's some REALLY good stuff on here - Akron/Family being the stuff that's sticking best today. Akron/Family has a very simple and chill, yet lush folk vibe going ... MORE

2007 was poised for greatness. Around this time last year, we knew that we'd have new records from Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, New Pornographers, PJ Harvey, Andrew Bird, Iron & Wine, and scores of other established acts. The future of popular music never looked brighter. And while none of those records were by any means terrible, my personal expectations were slightly less than met, and the bar didn't seem move a notch. I can't even come up with a list of my 10 ... “Now that my bodies grown the lonely heart poetry
Droning in hearts becomes songs that all objects
Sing to each other like friends telling stories”
(from “Ed Is A Portal”) To compare Akron/Family to anything, you kind of have to compare them to everything. Either way, you’re risking a deserved reviewer’s remorse. While you can hear the classic rock influences so forcefully at moments, they are only moments. That is to say that these flashes of homage to the greats a... MORE

...with Akron/Family's Love Is Simple. I'm all caught up in the bizarro - hippie-love - acid - trip - in - the - woods feel of the record, and I just keep hitting repeat. There have been plenty of "really good" records so far this year, but few have cut me to the core like this one. Definitely a contender for best of '07. Here's one of my favorite tracks: The album cover (more info on it here):
AND it's available on emusic!... MORE

Originally posted on Puddlegum.net Akron/Family is about to release the anticipated Love Is Simple, set for September 24 on Young God Records. The four piece is known for energetic live shows, and has received much love from music blogs for their experimental freak folk songs. Akron/Family spent two weeks tracking the album with Andrew Weiss (Ween) at Zion House Of Flesh in New Jersey. Akron/Family are currently touring with Megafaun and Greg Davis in the East, Midw... Here's a track off the latest album from indie folk outfit Akron/Family, who record for Michael Gira's Young God label. The new album is Love Is Simple. Where's they ever get that crazy idea?

After the Angels of Light brilliant record We are Him, it looks like Young God records is about to release another contender for this year's best albums.
According to Michael Gira, Akron/Family are _four extremely nice, sincere and well-mannered young men from rural America who came to NYC (in 2002) to make music, hoping to find a thread of real magic still winding through this city’s music scene._
Following last year's Meek Warrior, they will release on Septembe... MORE

I went to see Akron/Family play at Johnny Brenda's in Philly the other night, and boy, I gotta tell ya, it wasn't what I expected. I have their album, "Franny And The Portal To The Fractal Universe Of Positive Vibrations" which is more or less a quiet, melodic lil' number of psychfolk-y type music. But their live show, wow. It's hard to describe how I feel about it. On the one hand, those fellas REALLY get into it. They are consumate performers. Lots of long, craz... MORE

Last year, Akron/Family almost landed two albums in my top ten, their self-titled debut and the rougher, more exuberant split with Michael Gira's Angels of Light. It didn't seem fair, and anyway, I was having a lot of trouble reducing my list to ten, so very late in the year, I just switched the split with the debut, which had been holding down #2 all year to that point. This is not really very interesting, but the point is that Akron/Family is a really exciting, challengin... MORE

Will be checking out Akron/Family and Hamid Drake next Saturday so that I can once again be blown away by my favorite Brooklyn band. One of the best shows I caught last year was the one two punch of Akron/Family and Angels of Light. It doesn't get much better than that.... MORE
