Better Listening Through Chemistry. Or: Staring into Space with a Smile on my Face (couldn't decide on one)

Posted almost 2 years ago

'Opiate Sun' was the first album to invoke a feeling in me which I haven't felt in a long time. The feeling that compels me to obsessively collect and search and listen and devour music. 'Opiate Sun' makes the hair on my arms stand up. It is that gentle caress on the back of one's neck, or the western sunset stained by a thousand acre wildfire (must be seen to believe!). I am also amazed at how much feeling is channeled through such profound restraint. How does a man (Justin Broderick) do so after pummeling ears in the infamous Napalm Death and the brutal Godflesh? Pure artistic talent. Relics of the past are not forgotten, though, they are filtered and refined and incorporated beautifully. The title track's rolling bassline ala Godflesh for example (though it is filtered through a morphine haze, thus the name). Opiate Sun's title track is the stand out. It plays in your head like any one of the finest shoegaze (you know who) acts, and leaves one feeling warmly hypnotized, enthralled, and perhaps at peace. It has been said drowning is the most peaceful way to die, then Opiate Sun is the soundtrack to cool wet oblivion. Smiling in the depths while the tired Sun makes its endless march across the sky, the water refracting ancient light dancing in your dying eyes.

A bit of warning: If you leave the Mog radio on whilst listening, another impostor Jesu will assault you with hokey GAWDAWFUL "Jesus loves me" drivel and possibly ruin your sonic high and listening data. So turn the radio off, dammit Mog.

They look like they are staring at their shoes cuz they are constantly playing with effects pedals = shoegaze. I ussually avoid genre's and derivatives like the plague. Oh well.

I almost failed Chemistry.  However, I did see the teachers daughter dance naked on a table...BONUS POINTS!

I always find it ironic that most people have a hard time with a subject that adresses the basic principals driving their thoughts, emotions, and every atomic interaction in the fugging universe. Oh, and I suppose the reason I never saw the chemistry teachers daughter dancing naked is well spelled out in the pompous sentence I just wrote prior. Now I'm depressed, goddamn chemistry.

I told the teacher a couple times that I saw her daughter naked and she just laughed.  I wonder if she is laughing now???

Perhaps she laughed cuz there was nothing you could do or say to make her fail you in chemistry faster than you already were. Why woulnd't she be laughing now? Are you her son in law? Or her baby's baby-daddy? Or did you give the kid the clap?

Yup...AP Chemistry...which led to AP Physics.  I never had a problem with the smarts department...only authority...and work ethic...In school at least.  I figure I corrected those problems.

ok.  Based on your word (keeping in mind that you're a relative stranger) (Or maybe you're someone's stranger relative) (Oh great, now I've confused myself,......where was I?)  Oh yeah,  The ramshackle low-fi delight you bring us here. I'm just halfway through the first track & thus far....I'm in.  I'll get back to you upon further appraisal.

I would like to publicly state that I believe TF attended and passed AP Chemistry. I'm not sure if I believe the teacher's daughter thing but that's a different matter

dmdm- does it make you think of "Mountain" a little bit; like "Theme From An Imaginary Western)?

@ dmdm: soporific is why I like it. Musical xanax for a neurotic mind.
