MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Album: The Blueprint, Vol. 2: The Gift and the Curse
Track:

A few weeks ago, Jay-Z told MTV he was looking to start recording his next album as soon as he finished touring. Fans who may have had doubts that Hova would churn out a new album that fast may want to quiet down now, because Timbaland has confirmed he and Jay are already in talks to create new music.

"He wants me to do the whole thing this time around," Timbaland said Monday during a visit to the MTV News office. "I'mma make it a classic too. You better believe it. It'll be a monster! I always say this: You get a first single from me, I'mma get you up to gold. And it's hard to get you up to gold in this day [and age]."

Timbaland didn't reveal a specific start date, but if one would were to believe Jay-Z's prior statements the recording process should definitely be underway by September.

"We wanna go to the world," he added. "The world is 'Big Pimpin'.' 'Big Pimpin' ' is an international hit, so we wanna do 10 of those. Meaning, some of the songs gonna sound like M.I.A. would rap on some of the beats. You gonna be like, 'Whoa!' But it's Jay on 'em. That means it reaches everywhere. I'mma have songs with bagpipes. The music is gonna be so worldwide, he'll be able to tour the rest of his life, maybe, off just this one album. The Jay-Z album is gonna be phenomenal. You know why? We don't care. We're doing great music just to do it. We doing it for our fans who love us to say we ain't quit. I'm doing it 'cause that's my homeboy."

In addition to Big Pimpin, Jay-Z and Timbaland have created other songs like "Dirt Off Your Shoulder", "The Bounce" and "Ain't I".

I thought I heard Jay retired? Maybe that was a dream.

You should have known he was full of hot air when he said that. These mega-successful guys say all kinds of things when they get bored. (This goes for both Jay-Z and Timbaland, who have said they were retiring in the past)

All it takes is a little excitement to get them inspired and back in the studio again.

Do you think a Timbaland-produced Jay-Z album is a good idea? I wish he would let Danger Mouse produce :-)

I bet with Timbaland there'd be some "hits," and Jay hasn't really had a major hit in awhile. Danger Mouse would funk and weird it up a bit. What i really wish was that Jay-Z was my friend so then we could take his jet everywhere and I could be his plus one to Wimbeldon.

Maaaaaaaan...okay, I shouldn't have to say this here (because everyone knows by now), but Timbaland is my favorite producer hands down.  And he and Jay have never gone wrong.  Frost just listed a few of the songs for you up top, and let's not forget "Nigga What, Nigga Who", "Hey, Papi", "Lobster & Scrimp"...the list goes on.  Still, some part of me is saying that a Jay-Z album completely produced by Timbaland wouldn't have a lot of range.  Sure, you'd have your hits, but would you have those New York grimey tracks?  Would you have a "99 Problems"?  But, at the same time, Tim has his own range.  We'd probably end up with something brand new and out of left field.  Either way, I can't front.  The thought of a Timbaland/Jay-Z album gives me a little bit of wood.

To quote Rivers Cuomo warmly, "Timbaland knows the way to the top of the charts"
