WHERE E=MC HAMMER

Here's a new video from westcoast legend Ice Cube called 'Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It'. This is reportedly the first single off of Cube's upcoming album Raw Footage. The video contains a lot of strong imagery and social commentary that made Cube one of the most respected lyricists in the early 90s. Cube highlights some instances in which rap music has been used as a scapegoat, as well as more important issues that are overlooked in the process.

The question is what did Gangsta Rap make him do? Are We There Yet, Barbershop 2 ? No, I think he chose those parts on his own...

For every person that criticizes Ice Cube for doing a kids movie like "Are We There yet?" , there are others who got on his case for playing "a thug" in every role. It's really a no win situation.

You can't go back and try to be Gil Scott Heron after Are We Done Yet ?, and XXX: State of the Union . That video looks like a Mad TV parody of rap videos, how could anyone take that seriously?

What do the movies have to do with the messages in this video/song though? Should he not have an opinion on hip hop politics anymore since he starred in a disney movie?

A great argument could be made there isnt ENOUGH material like "are we done yet?" being made for young black kids these days. Nobody is beating down any doors to shove positive images to that demographic.

Agreed, my argument is more with the video - this video is full of weak and tired imagery. The "Nazi" white teacher teaching the revised history to his students. It's the same "White Devil" shit he was doing in the early nineties except kids don't know who Louis Farrakhan is nowadays. I think Ice Cubes main fault is that sometimes he becomes clownish in his imagery, not effectively satiric.

I think Chamillionaire's "Evening News" video "contains a lot of strong imagery and social commentary", in a more effective manner, I think.

point taken.

I liked Evening News alot... its a shame nobody really paid attention to the video. I think everyone was still caught up in the 50/Kanye hysteria around the time this was released.

More proof too that you don't have to spend a million to make an effective video. I could have made that video with enough patience. My computer/video skills aren't the point - why would anyone make these extravagant MTV style videos like Cube did, when we governed by YouTube now? The old rules of design always apply K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid!).

Raw Footage indeed! Forget the kind of movies he's been in lately, Ice Cube has always been a dope lyricist at heart. I'm glad to see him back on a track. We definitely need more artists speaking truth like this. Thanks for sharing!

It's something different. A lot of the imagery was effective but could've been flipped more creatively. Where did his flow go though? His delivery was the epitome of aggression and passion. It's what made him a unique rapper. He has the subject matter that I thought would make him bring that fire back but I can barely smell any smoke.
