MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:

Not even multiple kids movies, and a TV show aimed at reforming gang members can erase the memory of "Straight Outta Compton". An upcoming performance in Auckland, New Zealand has come under fire from a mayoral candidate who plans to stop it from taking place. Cube now joins the ranks of Akon, The Game, and Snoop Dogg, who have all faced resistance from officials down under.

Len Brown is putting the heat on TelstraClear Pacific Events in Manukau to cancel Cube's August 22 performance, stating that he promotes gangs and violence that the impressionable Australian youth will replicate.
"Ice Cube brings a gangsta message to our community via his gangsta rap," Brown said in a statement. "This message promotes gangs, gang violence and drugs. We don’t want this in our homes. We don’t want it on our streets. Our community is taking a stand on these issues. There is massive energy and resource dedicated to getting on top of gang activity in many parts of South Auckland. For once we have a cohesive partnership of community, government and police working together to confront this challenge and move things forward for our young people. So let’s be clear we don’t need a gangsta rappa [sic] working against the future interests of our young. It’s time to freeze out the Ice Cube."
Camilla Anderson, the promoter of the event, disputes those statements and believes Mr. Brown is using this as an election tactic to draw attention to himself. If Cube successfully completes his tour of Australia, there may be more controversy waiting ahead when he heads to Asia for a few dates.
