Charlie Wilson Sues EMI and Heineken

Posted over 2 years ago
Charlie Wilson, lead singer of The Gap Band, has filed suit against Heineken and EMI music group for using vocals of his in a commercial without permission.

Heineken used Snoop Dogg's song Beautiful, which featured Wilson in a recent TV ad for their Premium Light Beer. According to Reuters, the suit states that portions of the track were licensed without permission by Capitol Records (which is owned by EMI). Wilson also claims EMI failed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars gained from Beautiful. Wilson's gap band was a funk/soul group that rose to fame during the 70s and 80s, spawning hits like "Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)", and Outstanding.
I wonder how fast this one will be settled out of court.

  1. beaushelby says Assertiveness from an artist of Mr. Wilson's stature and reputation is in order and long overdue. I've heard so many corporate conversations where the perpetrators are counting heavily on the artist simply being too out-of-it to put up a fight over their rights . I hope that this (Mr. Wilson's assertiveness)is par for the course in the near future and that it will encourage others to do the same. Stand up , goddammit!!! Ain't nobody gonna give you nothing! Not even what rightfully belongs to you if they can get away with it.
