Review: Young Buck - Buck The World

Posted over 2 years ago
It's been just about 3 years since Young Bucks debut "Straight Outta Cashville", and ALOT has changed. The two biggest changes have been the landscape of hip hop album sales, and the credibility and relevance of G-Unit. 3 years ago hip hop was still selling in huge numbers, and G-Unit had a stranglehold on the industry. Nowadays, with sales way down, and G-Unit's grip loosened, alot of eyes are curiously watching this Young Buck release to see what the cornerstone of G-unit can do. The last 3 albums by Bucks crew members have failed commercially and critically. After a few listens to the album , I can say "Buck The World" is not an earth shattering classic release, but its an extremely solid effort. From front to back, the album is very balanced, theres not an overload on any one subject matter, so things dont get redundant. The production for the most part is absolutely great, tracks like "Get Buck", "Hold On", and "4 Kings" particularly stand out beat wise. Surprisingly, the Dr. Dre produced tracks wasnt one of my favorite tracks on this release. Lyrically, Young Buck isnt gonna blow anybody away, he's simply not that kind of artist. Buck is similar to Scarface, in the sense that his lyrics can be great, and he has things to say that are worth listening to, but his flow and wordplay isnt anything spectacular. There are no bells and whistles with Young Buck, he takes the raw and blunt approach. So for a listener who is spoiled by the likes of Common and Talib Kweli might be a little unimpressed at first listen. One of the most refreshing things about Young Buck, he doesnt go out of his way to make a radio friendly song. Before this album was released, Buck was making a point to say that he'd have more songs for "the ladies to listen to", that worried me a little. I didnt want a bunch of poppy "thug love" tracks thrown at me. To my surprise, i dont think ANY of the tracks were overtly geared in this direction at all. Something that did strike me as kind of odd was the collaboration with Linkin Parks frontman Chester Bennington. Talk about coming out of left field, I still dont know if that track will be able to grow on me.*The Good -* Get Buck, Hold On, Buck The World*The Bad -* Only one collaboration with 50? That sucks, they work well together.*The Ugly -* Although the album is good, its not as great as his debut album. If you've been spoiled by his earlier work this MIGHT leave you expecting a little more.*Verdict* - 3.5 out of 5 Mogs
