Kanye West Speaks Out On Homophobia & Soulja Boy @ NYC Concert

Posted about 1 year ago

At the tail end of his "Glow In The Dark" show in NYC last night, Kanye West delivered a five minute speech in defense of Soulja Boy and spoke out against homophobia in hip hop culture.

Soulja Boy has taken an incredible beating from fans and some artists due to his lack of lyrical content, and Kanye stressed the idea that we need to be accepting of all kinds of music. He then went on to name off different types of hip hop artists he enjoyed, noting that it's okay to broaden your horizons and not worry.

The theme of acceptance then went on to homosexuality and the accusasions he's had to face in the past. He hates how disrespectful the hip hop community are when it comes to ridiculing gays and said he's glad to escape "the mental prison" he was in growing up when he considered it okay to shun homosexuals.

It's a pretty good video.. . check it out

Good for him.  I don't even know too much of Kanye's stuff, but I'll give him props for making a stand I haven't seen other rappers do.  Wearing non stereo typical hip hop styles (The baggy pants started almost 20 years ago people!  Let's get a new sense of fashion, hip hop!) good for him being open minded, remember when Fresh Prince used to tour with other rappers that weren't at all like him.  At one point hip hop had party rappers and more serious ones, and that was okay.

I wonder what prompted his speech on homophobia? It's about time someone of his celebrity stood up in the hip hop world against homophobia.

As for that skank shmilykiky, this is the fourth post I've seen that same comment on, she really gets around!

I dunno.  I always wondered how I would react if one of my favorite rappers turned out to be gay.  Then I was hanging out with a friend who was a promoter (and happened to be gay) and he clued me in that one of my VERY FAVORITE rappers IS in fact gay.  It was kinda weird.  But, this particular rapper isn't really one of those hard-core, gangster types, so I guess it wasn't such a big deal.  I'm sure if Ice Cube turned out to be gay, it would be a little tough to swallow.

    Did I say swallow?

Troy, and I say who cares. If they make music that is good that is all that matters to me.

No, I agree with you on that point.  But, over years of listening to a person's music, you kind of build this idea of who and what they are.  And when something comes along that doesn't mesh with that, it's a little bit weird.  Like if you found out your father, brother, or best friend was gay.  I'm not saying it would diminish your image of that person, but it would take some getting used to.  I think it's the same with people whose music you listen to a lot.  You feel like you know them.

I know what you mean Troy, on the way to soccer tonight I listened to cube and thought of the idea what would happen if he came out. I saw your point through and through
