The career of George Clinton is still going strong after 30+ years and he's set to release his second album in three years entitled George Clinton and Some Gangsters of Love. According to Wikipedia, there seems to be conflicting reports on the true title of the album, the other titles in question are "Radio Friendly" and "Any Percentage of You Is As Good as the Whole Pie". However, since 'Gangsters of Love' is generally used in media reports regarding the LP, we'll roll with that one.
Gangsters is a covers album that employs the talents of a few GREAT artists including The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Carlos Santana, Shavo Odadijan of System Of A Down, Sly Stone, and RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan.
"Working with RZA was like the old days back in Jersey," the Plainfield, New Jersey native fondly stated. "ODB [Ol Dirty Bastard] was my boy. Him and Redman I've known forever. Rakim is like Miles Davis to me. I would love to see him do to a thing with Sly (from Sly and the Family Stone) and Eminem."
Speaking of Eminem, George Clinton claims to have met a wide-eyed teenage Eminem back in the old days, and witnessed his talents. No, not rhyming talents, but the fine art of telling "yo mama jokes".
"He (the engineer) brought Eminem to me and I was like 'that's the one,'" Clinton reminisced. "He was only 15 then but that boy could play the dozens like he was from 127th Street in New York. Whoever he hung around with he got the essence and what I always thought Hip-Hop was about which is being able to handle getting talked about right in your face without killing someone."
George Clinton's new album, George Clinton and Some Gangsters of Love, is set for release on September 16.
