WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Timbaland Talks New Album, "Shock Value 2"

Posted about 1 year ago

When Timbaland released Shock Value in early 2007, I had to force myself to give it a listen because I just couldn't bring myself to be interested. The story had a happy ending because it turned out to be one of my favorite albums of the year. The LP was a potpourri of pop, rap, and alternative music that had at least one track that appealed to everyone.

Timbo is already a few songs into the recording process for Shock Value 2, and if his interview with MTV is any indication... he's extremely confident this time around.

"It be hot for the world," he boasted of the 2007 album. "I really do focus groups. I get reports, readouts. I'm not gonna talk about it. If you ask for documentation, I got it. I'm a businessman and at the same time a CEO. But I looked at the charts: I went platinum in 16 different countries. Africa? Double platinum. Ireland? Double platinum. New Zealand? Triple platinum. London? Platinum. London is the hardest place to go platinum. France? Platinum. They don't like nobody unless you French, but they like me."

Am I mean for wanting the new album to flop after reading that? If you're looking for Tim to include the same collaborators on the new album, you'll be a little disappointed.

"Right now, I have a song with Madonna that I didn't put on her album. I saved [it] in case I wanna do one for me," he revealed. "Of course I'mma do one with Beyoncé. Of course I'mma do one with Jordin Sparks, Rihanna. It's a lot of people. I'mma do one with Jonas Brothers. I'mma try to have 10 major ones."

I immediately frowned upon reading the names of those artists, but then again I did the same thing with Nicole Scherzinger on the last album and that turned out well. At this point I'm moreso looking forward to the new Jay-Z album that Timbaland will produce in full. Hopefully that will take priority over the newest Shock Value.

It seems to me that he might be over-confidently selling out this time around. Rihanna and Jordin Sparks... maybe... but the Jonas Brothers? That's just asking to be judged. I thought he worked with talent, but like you said, he could surprise us.
