Glastonbury 'won't book an act like Jay-Z again'

Posted about 1 year ago

Glastonbury organizer Michael Eavis has gone on record to say he won't book anymore controversial acts for next years festival, following Jay-Z's anchor position at this years event.

Eavis is heavily leaning toward traditional acts in the future, and noted the stress from this year's event took a huge toll on him physically.

"We'll probably be going for the more traditional headliner next year," he said, "because there are more of them around and after this year everyone wants to come on board because it was such a good do. The thing is people are coming back.

"I've never enjoyed it so much [this year] although I've had a lot of worries with the tickets not selling - I lost half a stone in weight at one point.

"I was so scared but it came through. So when you get so scared like that and then when it comes right in the end it's fantastic."

Doesn't it look like he's pretty much blaming Jay-Z for the low ticket sales of this year's event? From what I read from music fans online, most didn't want to go to Glastonbury just because theres so many other festivals to choose from every year.

On the flip side, why would any hip hop artist want to take on this responsibility of headlining in the future, knowing what kind of headache it brings?

That is pretty strange, but I would think that people in England who listen to rap appreciate Grime acts like Wiley more than American artists.  Dizzee Rascal and them could never headline a festival like that though.  Too much stress on the sales.

I dunno.  I think at the point he pretty much has to go back to the formula.  For him to book another non-traditional headliner, whoever he chose would have to put on an even BETTER show next year.  And just off the top, I can't think of anybody who can follow Jay-Z.

I mean, if he books a rock act, and the show is just okay...it's cool.  He gave the people what they asked for.  If he books a hip-hop act, and the show is just okay, there will be much bitching, moaning, and gnashing of teeth.

He's doing the right thing in just taking pride in the fact that he pulled the biggest upset in recent music history.  Now he's just gonna sit back and coast for a while.

As far as why would any hip-hop artist want to try it when it's such a headache.  I wouldn't be surprised if EVERYBODY wanted to try it.  I think Jay just made Glastonbury a gold ring for hip-hop artists.  Like, "If Jay did it, I can do it too!"  Sorta like Pac and Biggie did for the double CD.  They made it kind of the titan's challenge.

I think those of us who saw Jay's show would dispute that score. :)

I agree, Troy. Nearly everyone who saw Jay-Z's performance would disagree with that score.

I don't think there's much question Noel Gallagher suffered from foot in mouth disease after Hova's performance. He even came out after and said he was wrong, if my memory serves me correctly.

He said that?  Wow.  That was big of him.

Correction. He blamed it on the media and said his comments were taken out of proportion, saying he actually "likes" Jay-Z:

Jay-Z also makes mention of no beef and that he's heard that Gallagher might want to work with him:

I just said this weekend how I really wanted to go to Glastonbury, but after seeing this, I never will. There are too many great festivals for me to support something with this narrow-minded mentality. You don't wanna book another hip-hop act next year? Cool, but you don't have to put it all over the media like that. Plus I wouldn't wanna deal with those fans anyway. Festivals are supposed to be fun...a community of music lovers coming together to co-exist for a weekend....not a bunch of whiners.
