Alicia Keys Clarifies Controversial "Gangsta Rap" Statement

Posted about 1 year ago
Alicia Keys has released a statement in regards to her comment about "gangsta rap being a ploy created to convince black people to kill each other". (you can read the original post on that by clicking *"HERE":http://mog.com/MrFrost/blog_post/155850*)In a classic case of back peddling, Ms. Keys says "her comments made to Blender Magazine were misrepresented". ""My comments about `gangsta rap' were in no way trying to suggest that the government is responsible for creating this genre of rap music," Keys said in a statement issued by J Records. "The point that I was trying to make was that the term was oversloganized by some of the media causing reactions that were not always positive. Many of the `gangsta rap' lyrics articulate the problems of the artists' experiences and I think all of us, including our leaders, could be doing more to address these problems including drugs, gang violence, crime, and other related social issues.""As for the AK-47 remark, Keys said Tuesday that AK-47 is a nickname given to her by friends "as an acronym for Alicia Keys and a metaphor for wowing people with my music and performances, `killing 'em dead' on stage. The reference was in no way meant to have a literal, political or negative connotation."Blender magazine is sticking by their original story. *Do you guys think Blender somehow twisted her story around, or is Alicia's PR squad doing damage control?*

  1. Augusts1 says I think Blender twisted what she said cause the original comment just seemed so out of left field ya know. Journalists ARE known for pulling things out of context time & time again.

  2. MrFrost says I did hear that the reporter originally asked her "who's you're favorite gangsta rapper"... but I haven't confirmed that. In any event, if Blender truly did twist up her intentions, she should choose her words more carefully next time.

  3. Augusts1 says I don't think it's a matter of choosing words more carefully really. Misinterpretation can happen whether someone is clear about what they said. An interview is an impression of the convo the journalist had w/the artist, so they often take creative license & too often misinterpret what was said. We all have certain filters we hear things through too.

  4. msquared64 says Blender might not have necessarily "twisted" her words, but they could have been taken out of context... as Scribes4Life commented on your initial post about this "First, I don't know how much trust printed interviews; people are taking what you say and putting them on a page without the nuances of facial expressions, gestures or general mood.," I additionally think that maybe she went on to clarify, but the magazine might have chosen to print the juicy parts to garner more interest/controversy in the article...
