Classic Hip Hop Vids Vol. 4 - Tha Dogg Pound - New York, New York

Posted about 4 years ago
This video was released in 1995, smack dab in the middle of the Eastcoast / Westcoast "war", and intentionally poured tons of gasoline onto the fire. Instead of trading shots back and forth through the media, Tha Dogg Pound flew from L.A. to NYC and filmed the song right in the middle of times square. Although they don't take any direct shots at anyone in the actual song, the visuals of Snoop Dogg kicking over a skyscraper was the ultimate sign of disrespect. The Notorious B.I.G. allegedly got on the radio in N.Y. and told everyone that this videoshoot was going down, which led to Tha Dogg Pound's trailer being riddled with bullets. Visually, this won't win any awards, but the effect it had on rap at the time was defintely felt. *"Classic Hip Hop Vids Vol.1 - Kanye, KRS -1, Rakim & Nas":http://mog.com/MrFrost/blog_post/152572"Classic Hip Hop Vids Vol.2 - Outkast - B.O.B":http://mog.com/MrFrost/blog_post/152803"Classic Hip Hop Vids Vol.3 - The Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotized":http://mog.com/MrFrost/blog_post/153247*

  1. TroyPowers says I dunno. I always thought the whole "diss" aspect of this song was way over-hyped. To me, the video is more of a statement that "I'm just as big in New York, as I am in L.A." more than it a diss of New York or any New York rappers. I've never heard Snoop speak ill of the east coast. Even when he got all the boos at the source awards. I think this was something that was just misunderstood, and blown out of proportion. Sure, it was bold, and borderline disrespectful. But, I think it was the media coverage and Hot 97 incident that made it what it is today. Funny that Korrupt is the only one that raps on the song, and he's got the most east coast flow of them all. Then again, maybe that was the intent.

  2. MrFrost says Well i did note that nobody got dissed in the song... all of the disrespect comes from the fact that this happened during the East/West war and Snoop kicked over the building. Things were not all peaches and cream at the time. Remember when 2pac and Dre appeared at the 1996 MTV Video awards in New York... they didnt even stay for the entire show... After their scheduled TV appearance they immediately flew back to L.A. So while the war was mostly media hype... it's not like anyone from Death Row Records could just walk down the street in NY without catching an ass whipping... and vice versa.
