"Worlds Greatest Record Collection" Sells On Ebay For $3 Million

Posted about 1 year ago
A library sized record collection recently netted over three million dollars on eBay. The impressive collection, owned by Paul Mawhinney, contains nearly almost every genre of music (no hip hop) and has been built over the course of 50 years. Here's what the collection's description says:
"More than half of the recordings in this incredible collection are NEW, with individual records worth hundreds or thousands of dollars each on the collectibles market. Covering many decades of music, the collection includes 78's, 45 singles and EP's, LP's, and CD's. While there are an estimated 6 million unique recordings, there are also many duplicates, which can be sold to recoup some of the cost of the collection without diminishing the collection's historical value."
The music has been kept in a 16,000 foot climate controlled warehouse. Sounds great and all, but I don't want to spend three million on music, and STILL not have "Ain't nothin but a G thang" on hand in my collection.... Here's another interesting tidbit from the official website.
"If you started listening to the music in this collection on the day you were born, and listened every minute of every day, by the time you finished, you'd be 57 years old. That's a lot of music. And it's a lot of history."

  4. Sterfish says It may contain no hip-hop, but I bet every crate-digging hip-hop producer is drooling. Could you imagine the types of gems that DJ Premier or the late J. Dilla could create with a collection like this?

  5. dermahrk says So the guy who amassed this collection could not have possibly heard it all. Which makes him more of a collector than a music lover. Hey, *I'VE* got no hip-hop in my collection either. And neither does my best friend, Tyrannosaurus Rex.

  6. Scribes4life says why give away your entire collection of music (even if you're just a collector) for 3 mil, when many of the individual records are worth "hundreds or thousands of dollars"? doesn't really make sense to me...
