Rumor: Nas May Be Dropped From Def Jam If He Doesn't Change Album Title

Posted about 4 years ago
The rumor going around today is that Def Jam is considering dropping Nas from their roster if he doesn't change the title on his new album Nigger.
"There is no way that we can put out an album with that title. Many retailers have already told us - flat out - that they won't carry [an album with that title] ... Nas' last album [Hip Hop Is Dead] sold pretty well, but not well enough for the headache he's causing [the label]." A source reportedly told Hip Hop Game."If Nas doesn't change his mind, he'll be dropped. And he doesn't have to much time to come to that realization." He continued.

This latest tidbit of information wildly contradicts L.A. Reid's strong vow of support during an MTV interview last fall. However, L.A. Reid also vehemently denied reports that Jay-Z was leaving the company, and those turned out to be false also. This is what Reid had to say to MTV...
“Anything Nas wants to do, I completely stand beside him. Nas is prolific, he’s prophetic, he’s a genius, an amazing artist of respect. So, while I’m not sure exactly all that the title entails, I know it’s smart, so I stand behind him. That’s real.”
The only thing we know for sure is that someone is lying. Shareholders in Def Jam's parent company have already threatened action of Def Jam releases this album, so it's definitely NOT far fetched that Nas can be dropped.

  1. TroyPowers says I wonder if Nas owns the tracks. I'd say just take it to Koch or somebody. But, he probably doesn't. His own fault for being in the game this long and not being signed to his own label, I guess.

  3. msquared64 says crazy... I mean, it was obvious that Wal-Mart wouldn't carry that album, and probably not iTunes (which is a huge one), but dropping him from a label?

  4. boscojim says WOW! Now that's some serious news. Incredible, my man! Nas apparently is masterminding something to try and start this controversy and upheaval. I'm not even going to try and understand the motives behind his decisions, but I would like to know more from him why he's decided to call the album that way. He's definitely got some balls to, maybe not class, but definitely balls to stick to his guns and name the album as he pleases. Maybe he knows damn well that all of this would happen and its his way of sabotaging his roster spot with Def Jam. What ever the case may be, I like the muthafucker for a lot of reasons, this will just be one more reason. Nas is a Revolutionary. God Bless the God Son.
