WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Audio Backlog: Feist, The Reminder

Posted over 2 years ago
It was a while ago that I was listening to World Cafe on NPR and heard Feist through my ears. I was in the car at the time and quickly grabbed a pen to scribble her name and some lyrics (to google her by) onto my hand.Days later I had purchased the album (Let It Die) and had memorized almost every single song.So when I got a chance to get my hands on this album early? Oh baby oh baby. Normally I give these things a week or so to sit before I write on them but...wow.I like to think of Feist as...like a sweet Canadian girl Ben Gibbard once had a thing for, but she was kinda loosey goosey and slipped through his fingers but he still thinks about frequently. But this album? Well, good thing I purchased the first one. It got me used to her, and her voice, and the fact that she's Canadian Indie (which is a new brand of strange). But this album is just...amazing.First, her lyrics (previously pretty clear and biting) are a bit more coded (metaphor after simile) and laced beautifully with everything from french horn to harp.Musically it is a bit out there (all of these songs are pretty on key with her style, so no jumping genres this time). I feel like she's given us an intimate picture of who she is with all this.Because it's produced. I mean there's mixing like nobody's business...but to the point that it sounds almost unmixed. Like maybe they put a lot of production effort into it...but they did it on one of those playschool "record an' listen" things we all had as kids. And I love it.So far nothing's been super catchy, but I love it as a set.If you've never heard Feist before, give her a listen around here, and if you have heard her before, here's my current favorite track off the album:
