WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Here's the thing...I really liked Decadence (or Tokyo Decadence depending on which copy you picked up). And I liked them (if not loved them) live. They had this great vibe with each other. The problem? This album is really pop-esque. Think one of those crappy pop bands like (I'm bad at this, I don't really know any so...) Fall Out Boy, or something. They sold out like whoa and MTV is all over that stuff, lapping it up, literally. Now MTVU (whom I trust, and if you haven't really heard of yet I'd suggest checking it out) caught on to them about a year ago but never really pushed them very hard. Now, I don't listen to the radio (honestly, it's been stuck on NPR for years, on purpose), but it sounds like the kind of album that KISSFM or one of those awful pop stations would pick up.My issue?I like it. Like almost a lot. I'm not sure if it's momentary yet, but they do a good job of mixing. Some of the songs are very pop based (which they admit to, fully, and say that it was their intent), but other songs aren't. They sound like pop fusion and I like it. Careful, if you fall for this album the radio might pick it up and ruin it (and them) but expect "Beating Hearts Baby" and "Lying Through Your Teeth" on some radio waves near you.I suggest listening to it, at least. And if you haven't checked their last release, do, it's pretty rockin' -- but get ready for it, 'cause it's not your normal pop, nor fusion, nor rock, nor hardcore, nor electronic. It's a good little potpourri of interesting music.

  1. sugarbaby says I am still not over Decadence. I listen to "Beating Heart Baby" every day at least once. And "Brooklyn Is Burning" at least every other day. So when I got Popaganda and "Graduation Day" sounded a little too whine-y, I went back to Decadence. Maybe I am ready to give Popaganda a chance again. Then again..... "Baby is this love for real? Let me in your arms to feel... The beating of your heart baby. The beating of your heart baby..." So so good!

  2. MoreToKnow says This is what I mean. They admit to being whiny pop (new genre, yay), but man, can we take it?

  3. sugarbaby says I dunno. I have little tolerance for the whinging... then again, I feel like I owe them another listen because I have eeked every moment of enjoyment out of Decadence that I possible could. I went through the same thing with The Killers. Hot Fuss is just so perfect and when Sam's Town came out, I was a little on the fence. But I gave it a fair chance and then I saw them live, which totally won me over. Now it is in permanent rotation on my iPod. Hot Fuss is still there, too :) I guess I just have to listen and see.
