I was first hooked on Jonny in my 8th grade year after a trip up to Montana. We had driven to visit a good friend of my mothers' who had cancer. He asked if I'd heard of him and (being 13) I had to admit that I hadn't. That put me in a difficult spot. Here was this awesome man who I admired so much -- and I was so out of touch. I bought the CD that day. I listened to it sort of on the way home and it got put away almost immediately when I got home. After one of my first heartbreaks the
Lie to Me release became my heartsong. Ever since I've been completely in love with Jonny and his voice. So when this album came out I had high hopes (to me,
Long Time Coming was released a bit too early and was supposed to be this album). So when I finally picked up
Turn Around I almost died.I was sitting in the parking lot of my favorite local shop just scanning each track loving what I was hearing. Tight horn lines, great vocals, gospel back up. A very well produced (and deservingly grammy nominated) sound. Here's the catch. Jonny has found god. He found him on the last album (
Long Time Coming) and it was obvious, but not too overt. After years of descending into drugs, etc, this release shows a bit more adult in his actions. And that's what this album relates to. I'm usually not into christian oriented music -- but I won't discount it. And I didn't discount this one either. This release is, in a word, tight. It's hard hitting and awesome and very well done.I can only imagine if this is what he's putting out at 25 what he'll be putting out for the next 20+ years.
