In the same way that I had Rhett stored away in my closet I had put both
Gold and
Demolition away without much thought. Until someone said to me one day, "do you know who I love?" and so I dug then back up (never one to be over done by anyone). What I found was a pompous asshole with a great voice. I'm pretty convinced he's a jerk (and rather self centered at that) -- but in that sort of Ben Folds way, I love him for it.He seems sort of like a little kid who bangs his fists against the table until he gets what he wants. But he records (and plays live, the one and only time I've been able to see him) great music. He's got a new sound on every album. Each release has its own heart and soul but is still rooted in alt-country.He's been a "go to" artist for a few years now, meaning when I need his music, I
need it. I admittedly don't like him a lot with his other "bands" (reference: The Cardinals, Whiskeytown) but for some reason am amazingly drawn to him as a solo artist. He's alt-country, but not enough so that if you're on the fence on that genre that you'll hate him. He's very talented and this album, I feel, represents the must rounded collection of his music that you can get without buying every album and the thought of him putting out a Best Of is one of the funniest things I've ever heard.Rock on with the good music.
