WHERE MUSIC RULES AND WE PITY THE FOOLS

Obama Comments On Cambridge Cop Who Arrested Black Scholar

Posted 4 months ago

Until this pans out with concrete evidence, I would have to say OOPS!

This story reached the president and Obama has been quoted saying that the Cambridge officers "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates last week when they responded to his house after a woman reported a suspected break-in. (article)

I'm not sure if that helps. I mean, hey... he could be right, or wrong about it. But with the media reporting this kind of news, anything that the president says is going to be fuel for the fire. My first question is who is this woman? Why wasn't she interviewed by the press? Was she just driving by? Does she wear glasses? Does she take Welbutrin? Maybe he owed her money and she did it on purpose. Who knows now? I'm sure we will all find out something. The media is like a hungry bear on steriods.

As a black man I understand racial profiling. I don't like it. It's mainly statistics. And the cause behind it is always complex and screwy, but human beings seem to have no other way to deal with this sort of thing on such a grand scale. The whole country is part of a racial profiling continuum, it seems. We are all very different. Reacting with anger might only be natural for some, at this point in time. And when it happens to you, personally...it's a shock. Thank god it doesn't happen to everybody at the same time. That would be one fucked up context to be in for us all. As ridiculous as it sounds, racism, to me, is just another damn thing that people have created for ourselves to deal with everyday. It's best to have two or three reactions prepared in advance that don't make things worse.

Or you can do what the Specials did and write a song about it.

Two tone ska was created for racial unity. The black and white checker board is a symbol of that. But you may already know.

As a black man you don't really know diddly about it son. Nobody does. When racism against black people was at it's peak in this country, there was no media to cover the stories. At least now it's out in the open. And because of that there is more of a chance that wrongly accused black men will have support by good honest people. And that means every kind of race. Ya see, in this present day and age, a lot of people don't know the feeling. Not to mention that the country is so huge now, racism happens to all races now. And that has changed the demographics. You were right about the music, though. Music is the key and this door is wide open now...

Make music kid...and let the women harass ya for it!

The two combined will pave out a path for ya...

Those are wise words FBLJ. Many hopefully will never know that feeling from the slavery days...

And you are also right about women! They love the music and make time to let us know they do!

    god bless them

Yeah...it's beyond words man....and being specific about the root of the problem only accuses whites specifically.

Which makes more problems for the future...I still say the music is the glue that fixes the cracks in the foundation.

I can't think of any other way...

But I live in the SF Bay Area...where music rains on this racial parade...

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this post and the ensueing comments.  The sad fact is...out there beyond our rose-colored glasses, there are so called men of peace, on both sides of the devide, who have vested interests in keeping certain fires burning.

....But the happy fact that is , as you all have alluded to, music can be the tie that binds.

...The sad fact is......music can b a weapon in the war.

What I hope for is that all parties involved in the situation would admit their wrong doings, apologize to each other, and then have an open and honest discussion about the role race did play (not racsim, but race) so we, as a people, can try to avoid such things in the future.  This would do more for race relations, and human relations in general, than anything I can think of.  ...and it's really not that much to ask....

I guess deadmandeadman don't like Obama?

I do. And what he said is probably in response to a lot of mistakes by authority figures involving minorities. I think mistakes like this one by the police are media bait. And it's always interesting to hear what folks around the nation have to say. Good or bad....they make gr8 songs, movies, poems, sculptures. Which might be the best place for racism to exist. Never surprised though. People make racist comments everyday. And people are born brand new everyday. It's a constant volley of opinion that doesn't end.

randomactsofsound has the response I like to hear the most.

When I heard about this story, I remembered another president who commented on a local event and really stuck his foot deep in too deep. The President was Richard M. Nixon, the incident was the Tate-LaBianca murders, where RMN pronounced Charles Manson "guilty," relying on news reports. (National leaders must stay out of local matters, lest they FUBAR legal proceedings.)
