I drink you up

I don't have a lot of time so I'm going to toss this out there for those of you who need it. If you don't know _Soul Coughing,_ you should. Fantastic jazz-influenced alt-pop band from the 90s.1) First step, buy all three of their CDs. "Ruby Vroom," "Irresistible Bliss," and "El Oso." You can skip El Oso, if you like, though it has its moments. (Alternatively, download these songs and buy them later.)2) Second step, set up a quick playlist of these songs:Sugar Free JazzTrue Dreams of WichitaScreenwriter's BluesJanineSuper Bon BonSoft ServeLazybonesSleeplessRollingCirclesFully RetractableThe IncumbentThese are the twelve basic songs you need to hear to get the feel for the band. Possibly this is their most accessible stuff, but it's not by any means all of their good stuff. M. Doughty went on to do other things, but nothing of this quality. What's the key to their genius? Is it the upright bass? Perhaps we'll never know.Enjoy!

  1. Manos says Great playlist. My "Soul Coughing Part II" playlist would include: Disseminated Mr. Bitterness City of Motors And to the incredible bass, I would add the drumming as one of the keys to their success.

  2. Dean Browell says Not sure if I agree about Doughty's more recent solo stuff - he was pretty amazing at Lolla with his current backing band. There are some very haunting versions of Janine out there too... Such incredible stuff...

  4. LambCurry666 says Amen. Amen. Amen. They also have a best of record called Lust In Phaze, which I have but have never listened to. The track listing looks good, but I think that everything they put out, every song, was good.

  5. meSteve says Really interesting that you think El Oso is the optional album. Ruby Vroom, for me, is the one I don't need on my desert island, but I'll have to give it a more considerate listening. El Oso's gems, Circles, Rolling, Blame, $300, are as good as anything by Soul Coughing. Anyway, I agree, their rhythm section was magic. And I'd also second your selection of tracks.
