Artists You Should Know About
Posts
I remember the first time I saw Jon Brion perform at Largo (a small club in L.A.), the room was packed with music aficionados all waiting patiently for the virtuoso. I was on my second gin and tonic when out of the corner of my eye he appeared. He walked up to the stage with a what seemed to be a glass of beer (black & tan) in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other -- oh, this is going to be good.
Music producer/composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist... it's safe to say that Jon Brion excels at whichever musical hat he choses to wear. Remarkably self-taught in music, Jon has collaborated with and/or produced albums for Elliott Smith, Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright, David Byrne, the Eels, Sean Lennon.
Wonder twin powers - active!
Levelload is a girl-boy punk rock locomotive from the UK that managed to give me "Iggy Pop" sized goose bumps as I listened and rocked out to their punk rock anthem "I Know You Know,"one of four playable tracks on their Myspace page.
Lead singer and bass player Mariko LL is a stylized and gifted singer as well as a rocking bass player and her partner in crime, Tony LL is just as stylized and gifted on the guitar as he seamlessly shoots out three chord lighting boltz from his Telecaster in what, some may argue, could be the perfect sounding guitar tone.

Ingredients
- 4 in your face Japanese punk rock goddesses
- 2 cups of The Runaways
- 1 dash of Godzilla radioactive breath
- 3 sprigs of Shonen Knife
- 1 tablespoon of The Go Go's (optional)
Cook the 4 punk rock goddesses in beer till tender, add the 2 cups of The Runaways (slowly) and let boil for 20 minutes.
After boiling for 20 minutes, add 1 dash of Godzilla radioactive breath, but be careful not to add more then 1 dash or you might get fried, now gently stir in the 3 springs of Shonen Knife and bring to a simmer. Let simmer for about an hour...if you like, you can add in 1 tablespoon of The Go Go's for taste.
That's it, you now have a steaming pot of GGH -- now go get yourself some.

I just find this picture totally distracting. Every time I make a comment on someone's post and go back to the MOS I have to scroll past this picture of these totally hot Asian chicks. Which has nothing to do with music, it could be an ad for a massage parlor, and far be it from me to say that's a bad thing, I just know this is meaningless and it gets my attention every time. And however good they might be, it usually takes a gimmick to get peoples' attention. So, consider mine got, and maybe I'll remember their name if I get a chance to hear them, but I think my favorite bands are generally ugly (although the womenfolk seem to go for that Josh Homme fella).
hey robp, click on the read more button and you'll see a not so "hot" picture of GGH, leave a comment and let me know what you think after you check out their music ;)

you're so lucky to have seen him ! he's so talented
Glad you liked it. Jon is a massive talent. I have a couple of bootlegs of his performances at Largo and, while interesting, I ended up deleting almost all from my iPod. Maybe you have to be there.
hmm, choice between bad bootleg recording on your ipod or live performance? live performance for sure...;)
