WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Nine Inch Nails

Posted over 3 years ago
Today my new roomate sent me the data files for Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral. It's wrapping up as I write this. It's alot different from what I'm used to, it's 90s, Industrial, and the production very thick and layered. At the same time, alot of it's fairly familiar. The synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines owe much to Kraftwerk and early New Order, the mood, production, and musical elements such as mechanical beats and use noise owe alot to Bauhaus (whom toured with Nine Inch Nails this year), Big Black and Joy Division. I had been fairly familiar with "Closer" via the radio and "Hurt" by way of Johnny Cash's excellent cover. Though The Downward Spiral offers much more, like the dirge of "Reptile" or the groove of "Heresy." Although typically a fan of classic rock and indie, I think this was a divergence well worth it.

  1. ZZTodd says That is a great album. Everyone has heard 'Closer' on the radio, but that song doesn't even scratch the surface.
