Dust off your turntables and stock up on new needles... According to trend forecaster The Intelligence Group, there is a renewed interest in LPs. Soundscan reports that vinyl sales were up 15 percent in 2007 from the year before and Amazon now has a dedicated store with 150,000 records. So while we traded in sonic depth and tactile joy for portable convenience with our ipod/mp3 players, it seems that the young ones are kickin' it old school and finding musical excitement in the clicks and pops of those black grooves, liner notes that are actually on a record liner and experiencing full color fold outs on a format larger than a 2 inch screen. It goes so far as to speculate that the LP might be the saving grace the record industry is looking for, while for a 'niche market' at the moment they're thinking of new ways to attract more buyers to LPs with bonus tracks and vouchers for audio downloads "so that consumers have the high quality music listening experience and the ability to take their music on the go". Which means we are all going to have to buy the White Album again.
