I Need Your Key (To Turn Me On)

this track is truly amazing and fun. . . o well the whole damn record is....james brown recorded this album with the Louie Bellson big band...that's right JB with LB ... JB with a BIG BAND“When people talk about soul music, they only talk about gospel and r&b coming together. That’s accurate about a lot of soul, but if you are going to talk about mine, you have to remember the jazz in it. That’s what made my music so different and allowed it to change and grow.” — James Brown On this 1969 recording, Soul Brother #1 makes no secret of his love of jazz — and his own phenomenal gifts as an improviser. In collaboration with Louie Bellson, one of jazz’s most impressive drummers and one of its most expressive arrangers, Oliver Nelson, JB shows how truly amazing he was . . . sings his ASS off . . . . swings his ass off . . . souls his ass off1. That's My Desire 2. Your Cheatin' Heart 3. What Kind Of Fool Am I? 4. It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World 5. The Man In The Glass 6. It's Magic 7. September Song 8. For Once In My Life 9. Everyday I Have The Blues 10. I Need Your Key (To Turn Me On) 11. Papa's Got A Brand New Bag 12. There Was A Time

  2. MilesTrane says it kills bro, it really does i forgot to add this: in the spirit of full disclosure,i gotta say this was reissued by the company i work for so be wary of my corporate shilling. That said this music simply kills :)

  3. Spencer Owen says "Everyday I Have the Blues" = inspiration for "Everyday I Write the Book" by Elvis Costello? (and hey, wasn't my last comment Elvis Costello-related as well?) James is looking great on that cover. I'd be happy to hear all sorts of records he's made.

  4. Grievous Angel says would you file this under soul or big band? sounds awesome- i will definitely check it. btw, why the fuck can't mog remember who i am? i had to log in three times to leave comments on your posts. i have FF set to accept cookies, and mog set to remember me, but the bitch just can't seem to "remember my name":http://imdb.com/title/tt0078150/

  5. MilesTrane says the filing question is a great one that record stores and label sales guys always struggle with. . . genre classifications aren't perfect for sure. Waterloo Records in Austin TX has done away with them almost completely and simply alphabetizes their inventory so what ends up happening is things like Coltrane being nearly next to Coldplay. I love that personally. this JB album would be in the JB bin wherever that is in that particular store - most likely R&B/Pop. Me? I call it great music... But if I had to peg it I'd call it Soul - this ain't no Glenn Miller record :)

  6. MilesTrane says hey spenc - possible as elvis dad was a vocalist and may have done that song . . . "every day I have the blues" was made famous by Joe Williams performing with the count basie big band - in the 50s'?. .. and was a blues/pop standard for some time prios to that.

  8. MilesTrane says Hey Kate -thanks! That is a great blog. . . and I completely forgot about the fact that JB performed this music last week at the Hollywood Bowl . . I am truly spaced . . . maybe that was why my subconcious made me post it . . if i was in LA i would most definitely have done my best to go . . . .

  12. artAlexion says Damn! Ship to home only. I have a lousy UPS guy. Never gets a signature. Stuff never arrives. I can't make the claim because I'm not the shippper (the shipper, not the recipient is the UPS customer). I've caught him throwing electronics packages 50 feet from sidewalk to door. Gotta keep looking for a local bricks and mortar outlet. Time to check out the independent music stores.
