Tricky Thump

Posted over 2 years ago
  • Artist:
White Stripes vs Led Zeppelin vs DJ Zebra
  • Track:
    Icky Thump Whole Lotta Funk
Still flushed with the glow of the weekend’s Bastille Day escapades (which included shakin’ my derrière to a plethora of after-midnight mash-ups at the July edition of Bootie), I’ve been feeling more than my usual affection for the French. This morning, I snatched up a demi-baguette and a demitasse from the boulangerie up the block. Then, I chased my petit déjeuner with a new treat from that Parisian maître de mash DJ Zebra, whose incendiary Bootie set at the DNA was one of the nightlife highlights of the past few years. This latest offering from Zebra makes an astute audio statement about the abiding influence that Led Zeppelin’s monstrous mix of psychedelica, heavy metal, blues, folk and rock ‘n roll has had on the White Stripes and, specifically, the trendy Detroit duo’s singer, guitarist and songwriter Jack White. Taking the Stripes’ current signature song “Icky Thump” and a live version of Zep’s “Whole Lotta Love,” Zebra, who’s a pretty good musician himself, added some guitars, keyboards and drums of his own, and…Voilà! “Icky Thump Whole Lotta Funk.”

  3. Wanbli says After listening a second time, it feels like near any hard rocking song from the 50s until today could be effectively mixed and mashed with the song icky thump, due to it's beat and spareness - there is alot of room to fill in there. Also sounds as if the songs are sped up/slowed down in places to make it mesh - have to pull out a version of "whole lotta love"

  4. Mike the Knife says Just to reiterate, it's a live version of "Whole Lotta Love." And there may not be any specific rules, but it ain't that easy to make a seamless mash-up, no matter what songs you're trying to combine.

  5. Lizziegreeneyes says Now - I could listen to the White Stripes if they sounded more like this... I know they are quite the popular duo - but a little hard for me to swallow - I dig the Raconteurs though - who knew :)

  6. Lady Miss Ian says Oh la la Monsieur Mike. Tres bien. Be still my mashy heart. And word to your comment above - it's not all that easy to get mashes to mesh. That's why we appreciate the good ones. ;-)

  15. Mike the Knife says Lizziegreeneyes: I'm also mezzo-mezzo about the Stripes, although I've enjoyed them every time I've seen them in concert. Lady Miss Ian: Vraiment. Making the mighty mash-up requires a combo of inspiration and technical skill. QueenofHell: No, it's pretty darned good. PopeyePete: I understood you just fine. Blue cheese and champagne for everyone! Augusts1: Le funk! C'est chic! Blue Meenie: After a few listens, yo-ou-ou need...more! sinnervip: D'rien... chucky: Nifty...and icky. bringmeup: I would have posted a clip, but - alas - my personal videographer had the night off. And not all of us are as bold as you, fair dancer. avenustylee: You are correct. It's so cool, it's hot.
