Sweet Independence

Posted almost 5 years ago
Joyeux Quatorze Juillet! Belatedly. In France, July 14th is Bastille Day, which marks a significant event in the French Revolution - the storming of the Bastille prison by citizens of Paris on July 14, 1789. The Bastille was notorious as a jail where the government incarcerated political dissidents. It was such a galvanizing moment in the country's history that July 14th is considered by many to be the French equivalent of our Independence Day.So it’s Sunday the 15th, and I’m a little spent from last night’s festivities here in San Francisco, where the holiday is celebrated with great enthusiasm. There’s a street party downtown amid a cluster of French cafés, bars and restaurants. This year, the DJ team on hand pumped out the usual Euro-disco, techno, and drum-and-bass at ear-splitting volume, including a call-back to Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” and some Daft Punk - but they also drove the crowd into a full-bore frenzy with Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”Although a few other soirees go down (and the monthly Bootie mash-up party was held last night – and was my final, festive stop before greeting the dawn), my favorite diversion on Bastille Day is always the annual Bardot A Go-Go bash overseen by DJ Pink Frankenstein – a Francophile of some repute, with a museum-class collection of French pop songs and videos that fuel the fun. Bardot A Go-Go returned to the local boite the Rickshaw Stop this year, and was the usual gathering of young American neo-Mods, French nationals, and retro-pop music aficionados. As ever, Pink and his colleagues turned the joint into a fab 1960s-era Parisian discotheque. In their honor (and as acknowledgement of my French friends and their magnifique country), I rustled up a vintage video featuring one of my heartthrobs of the ‘60s yé-yé music scene, singer France Gall. She’s captured here in 1964, performing the extremely suggestive “Les Sucettes” – written by French pop-music idol Serge Gainsbourg.Hmmm. The adorable Mlle. Gall sure does love her sweets…

  3. Mike the Knife says Yeah, C.P. I often think that the universe is sending us the same signals at the same time. Referencing GSH and the Last Poets in regards to Bastille Day...brill! D'accord, Lizzie! Gotta also mention the duet by Serge and his daughter, actress-singer Charlotte Gainsbourg (so good in "The Golden Door," "The Science of Sleep," and "My Wife Is an Actress"), when she was still a kid: "Lemon Incest." Really. (Did I just hear an "Eeww!" out there?)

  6. Lady Miss Ian says Nothing phallic about THAT video. Nope, just an innocent song about..er..um...lollipops, yes? Mon Dieu, Monsieur Mike. Tres bien post. Makes me wish we had a larger contingent of French folk here in my neck of the bois. Most of our celebrations are pretty tepid compared to SF. Well, at least I can drink some good French wine to celebrate the people of La Belle France. Alors Enfants....

  8. Dale says That's wonderful, that there's enough people around that would celebrate Bastille Day in SF; I've never lived anywhere that cosmopolitan. Sweet!

  11. Mike the Knife says Lester Jonze: Insanitie?!? CrashPryor: ...to our respective mothers! Lady Miss Ian: Merci! I've gotta say that I laughed out loud when I first got a gander at the vid. I thought that it might have been a boner - that is, on the part of the director - to be shooting those nice young women in the act of, well, enjoying a taste sensation. Then, I realized that it was a statement on the dangers of too much sugar in the diet. Yeah. That's it. bringmeup: Vous êtes très aimable! Dale: It's a good time, even if it gets a little hectic. Wish a bunch of you guys and gals could instantly teleport in for some of this stuff. Now, that would be sweet. Lord Dream: I say, bring it on! soulrocket: Appreciate the kind words, soul-r. The young Mlle. Gall was a babe, to be sure. Ramble around YouTube with her name as your keyword, and you may find yourself really smitten. And like I told Dale, it would be amazing to have a global MOG contingent somehow materialize at one of the S.F. events that I frequent, especially Bootie. Where's super-science when you need it?

  15. goodmusiconly says When I was in college I worked at a french bistro ... the fresh baked bread I would snag from the warming drawer in the a.m., paired with an espresso topped with chocolate shavings was enough to make me want to quit school and become a professinal eater. Every year our restaurant would host the Alliance Française Bastille Day celebration and it was quite the party ... a few times, myself and the other female wait staff would don fishnets and satin dresses and do the can can in between serving champagne and epicurean delights ... fun times! Great vid ... gotta love the dancing, erm, candies ;)

  16. Mike the Knife says dermahrk: "yé-yé" is a French transliteration of "yeah-yeah," as in the Beatles' "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" from "She Loves You," and shout-outs from a few other British Invasion tracks. As such, it references the music/trends/lifestyle of the '60s mod scene, swingin' London, etc. Thus, the "yé-yé girls" were the French pop-scene equivalent of England's miniskirted dolly birds. Girlcrawl: She certainly was a sensation in her native France for a while. And so darned cute... nicki: Who need lollipops at the Bastille Day BBQ? Just let them eat cake! goodmusiconly: Erin in fishnets - serving bubbly, and doing the can-can? Zut alors! I nearly had a heart attack. (And yes, I'd pay good money for a video.) I've already been tossing and turning nights, because of a recurring dream wherein I'm chased through the Chunnel by seven-foot tall candy sticks in high-heels. Now what?!?
