There are some songs that just grab you – and don’t let go. They creep into your mind and stay, even when you want to chase them out. And it’s always strange (but all too frequent) when a musician nails it once or twice and seemingly never again. Hits like lightning – and then nothing.Which brings us to Gerry Rafferty. His tenure as a member of the ‘70s British folk-rock band Stealers Wheel produced one outright pop classic: 1973’s “Stuck in the Middle with You,” which later received some notoriety on the soundtrack of a memorably grisly, sickly funny scene in filmmaker Quentin Tarentino’s debut feature “Reservoir Dogs.” In the wake of the Wheel, Rafferty took the solo artist route. And in 1978, he came up with another ear-worm of a tune that hit the upper reaches of the charts: “Baker Street,” with a devastating saxophone hook that still sounds thrilling years after it was recorded.Anyway, a few weeks back, merry MOGster chucky was listening to tunes with her mother, and they bonded over “Baker Street.” I messaged her with the news that I had come upon a mash-up using the song in conjunction with rapper/singer Akon’s randy “Smack That” – a Top 10 smash in late 2006. She said, in essence, “Bring it on!”San Francisco DJs Adrian and the Mysterious D - who are also known as A plus D and co-produce the booty-licious monthly mash-up party Bootie in S.F., Los Angeles, New York City and Paris - pulled this one together. Though Adrian says to beware of flatness and dissonance, here’s their nutty mash-up of Gerry Rafferty and Akon, “Smack That on Baker Street”:
