Mashing Up That Hill

Posted over 2 years ago
  • Artist:
Placebo vs Pet Shop Boys vs Kate Bush
  • Track:
Love Comes Running Up That Hill Quickly
Pitting two or more musical elements against one another to make a wholly new thing, mash-ups come in all shapes, sizes and flavors: rap versus rock versus pop versus soul versus reggae versus techno, unto madness. There are rock-on-rock and pop-on-pop numbers with distinctly different tunes from the same genre that nonetheless fit together like side-by-side puzzle pieces. And occasionally someone will scramble together two disparate versions of the same song, such as A plus D’s “Heart of Puppini,” mixing Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” with the Puppini Sisters’ jazzy, scatty interpretation of the new-wave/disco classic. From the foot of the mighty Rockies, Denver, Colorado DJ/producer Magnet has tried the latter approach, and it’s a stirring vertical climb, traversing the recent cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” by Placebo – the darkly passionate London rock band (and MOG fave from the Pacifico to the Mediterraneo) – while taking valuable detours to the original recording by British art-rock chanteuse Bush, as well as a side-trip the Pet Shop Boys’ lush techno ballad “Love Comes Quickly.”Magnet dubs it “Love Comes Running Up That Hill Quickly,” and you might enjoy tagging along:

  1. ciphermedia says I like this Mike, although I think hearing more Kate Bush a bit more to the foreground in parts might have made it a bit more interesting. The Placebo track is still quite dominant (which is not really so bad 'cos I like that song). Nice post though. Once again, thanks.

  3. Mike the Knife says ciphermedia: Discounting Neil Tennant's "back-up vocals," I think it comes off like a duet between Brian Molko and Ms. Bush - and it's way-clever at about 2:45 when Magnet lets Kate take the lead with the lyrics, "Let me steal this moment from you now." Lizzie: D'accord!

  7. Girlcrawl says In my humble estimate, this was a rather tricky mash to attempt (even though the material/versions did scream mash-up) because there was no room for mediocrity - either the mash would work brilliantly or fail miserably. After giving the effort a listen, I can happily state that DJ Magnet pulled it off - it works, and I do love Kate's 'let me steal your thunder now' lead. Clever indeed!

  9. Neill says Molko in a Lounge Lizard Trip Hop stylee. Could be a winner! Someone must have had him as a guest artist on something like this by now?

  10. Mike the Knife says Lizziegreeneyes: De rien, cherie... Rawkkiddo: The Boys are a tasty ingredient, to be sure. Me and the Horse I Rode In On: Rolling up...that hill? Girlcrawl: Some of these DJs make it seem easy, but it's usually quite a balancing act to acheive a sonorous blend while maintaining the integrity of the parts - so it's still "Oh wow! They mashed those songs together!" Anna: Thought it would strike a chord (or two) with you. And again, welcome back, Ambassador. Neill: You'd think so. Molko certainly delivers on a regular basis. Now, when do they blow up big in the States?

  17. Jonh Ingham says Kingo, you maintain your heady position as king of mash. This is excellent. To someone who didn't know I'm sure they'd think it was just one song. I wait in awe for your next one.
