Mainlined Mash Cut with Sugar

Posted over 4 years ago
A few of my Trusteds have joined me in dropping delectable mash-ups on the MOG-iverse at large. (Yo, Henry!) Our Aussie buddy ciphermedia even unleashed a little thunder from his hard-drive down-under, and beat me to posting a video of “Ray of Gob” http://mog.com/ciphermedia/blog_post/82602 - the killer meld of Madonna’s “Ray of Light” and the Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen” by Brit mash-master Mark Vidler a.k.a. Go Home Productions. Although “Ray of Gob” was offline for a while, it was recently restored to downloadable form in a handful of variations on the mp3 release of Vidler’s “Pistol Whipped” EP; and cipher provided a link: http://www.gohomeproductions.co.uk/mp3.htmlSpeaking of Vidler, a thread on bubblegum music initiated by the soaring soulrocket may have inspired some of my mild contempt for the form, but it also reminded me of a beloved Go Home production. Vidler took the shadowy, delirious, drugged-up and massively influential rock of the Velvet Underground - darlings of the ’60s downtown Manhattan art scene; and, in a fit of divine madness, he married it to the sunny, trivial, infuriatingly catchy bubblegum pop of The Archies – a pre-fab studio group that provided songs for the kiddie cartoon show based on the comic books about wholesome teenager Archie Andrews and his pals ‘n’ gals. So, for soulrocket and any other interested parties, here’s where the Velvet Underground’s “I’m Waiting for the Man” meets The Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar” – maybe in a dark alley. Heat up a spoonful of “Velvet Sugar”:

  2. Mike the Knife says There are scads of them, but I don't want to overload it. Alas! I still can't find the Young mash in my files. The search continues.

  13. Mike the Knife says Jonh: Vidler is inspired. I could just roll out stuff from his discography alone and dazzle the mash-up initiates. Augusts1: He'll often throw a curve or surprise - like the Jaxx rip - into the coda as a payoff. But he's not the only one. Party Ben's Green Day/Oasis mash, "Boulevard of Broken Songs," is nicely tagged with Aerosmith's "Dream On." Sends 'em home happy. soulrocket: Will do! PopeyePete: Yeah. It's sinisterly good.
