WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

One of the Pod People

Posted over 2 years ago
Today’s New York Times (and probably numerous other publications) featured a full-page ad from Apple that thanked the buying public for 100 million iPods sold. That’s a hell of a lot of portable music on the march, and some considerable profit for Steve Jobs and the Mighty Mac Attack. But I say, “Good for them.” The iPod and competing mp3 players have been a real boon to music lovers in more ways than the obvious.Case in point: I’ve been on the road a lot lately, including an Easter weekend visit with the family. As a result, I haven’t been able to MOG it up as much as usual. But, a consequence of all the traveling has been a reintroduction, via the smallest of iPods, to a lot of majorly crucial music - the cream of my catalogue - that I’ve been neglecting in favor of the freshest tracks in my files. Despite the usual bigger-is-better philosophy that governs computer drives, there is something to be said for a teeny 1-Gig Nano. When I was loading it up last year, its size forced me to focus on the music that means the most to me. I chose between one and four songs each to represent my favorite recording artists. And though I have lots of new stuff on my laptop’s hard-drive, I'm pretty judicious about doling it out to the iPod - which is usually reserved for trips outside the city where I dwell. As a result, those journeys are more than geographical. They’re expeditions to the desert island where I keep my all-times, my bestest – the soundtrack to my life. The coolest thing about what is currently on the little player is that I have yet to regret any of my song choices. Sure, I’ll be putting some Arcade Fire, Peter Bjorn and John, and Cinematics on the iPod sooner or later, but it was so amazing to be motoring down the Pacific Coast and hearing, in shuffled succession, “Playground” by XTC, Rod Stewart’s cover of Ewan MacColl’s “Dirty Old Town," The Byrds’ version of Goffin-King’s “Goin’ Back,” “Rocks Off” by the Rolling Stones, “Harmony in My Head” by the Buzzcocks, “Must Be Dreaming” by Frou Frou, “St. Elmo’s Fire” by Eno, “Ooh La La” by Goldfrapp, “Surf’s Up” by the Beach Boys, “Miranda” by Fleetwood Mac, “Everlong” by Foo Fighters, “Rockin’ in the Free World” by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and so much more. So, every time I want to sneer at Jobs and Apple for being so damn smug about their products, I have to remember how easy they’ve made for me to be serenaded by my favorite tunes. Forget that old political promise, “A chicken in every pot.” We now have a jukebox in every ear. And, to serenade you, here is a clip of The Byrds as they promo "Goin' Back" on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," back in the late '60s:

  1. kristiana says yeah, I feel the same way. I put only those things on my nano that I'm sure to hardly ever want to skip. it's worked out pretty well so far!

  2. chucky says You know, that's an idea Mike. I always skip when I shuffle. I've never sat down and made a playlist of my most loved, never skipped songs.

  3. Mike the Knife says It's all the flavors I love, kristiana. All killer - no filler. Happy to float the idea, chucky. Here's our new motto: List 'em, load 'em, lock 'em - and listen to 'em.

  4. mktackabery says excellent use of the Nano. I have a 2G model myself, and it does force you to pick and choose. Myself, I fill mine up and I make sure I give everything on the drive a good listen before I take it off, and I stick with stuff longer and enjoy my music more. Long live the iPod.

  5. Jonh Ingham says Wow - a vid of one of my favourite Byrds songs. Good choice! It would have been truly amazing if they had been playing live - did these guys ever not mime on TV?

  6. Spike says Great Byrds clip. I love their version of "Goin' Back" even better than Carol King's or Nils Lofgrin's. Have you heard "Have You Seen Her Face" from the Byrds' _Younger Than Yesterday_ album? My 6GB iPod is almost full of desert island playlists, all of which I'm now sick of most of the time. Time to slash and burn.

  7. Anonymous says I am too much of a moody listener. I think all the songs I would ALWAYS want to hear and NEVER want to skip would fit on a single audio CD. I skip a lot when I put my iPod on shuffle, but I'm rarely skipping the same things on different days.

  8. Mike the Knife says Size notwithstanding, they are so damned convenient, mkt. And like I said, I embrace the programming challenge that 1 Gig presents. Can never get too much of the Byrds, Jonh. And those middle period, space-cowboy albums of theirs...so awe-inspiring. Lip-sync or swim. I don't care. Heard 'em all, Spike. Or, at least, heard all that have received official release - and have most of them ripped to mp3. Especially fond of "Renaissance Fair" and "The World Turns All Around Her" and, well, no room to note them all. Chacun a son gout, echoes. :-)

  9. Anonymous says Oops, I'm just realizing I might've sounded a bit fussy there. :) Granted, I *am* fussy when it comes to music, but I try not to get it on anybody.

  10. dermahrk says There are definitely real live Byrds vids out there. I just bought and watched the T.N.T. show video (from '66, I think) and they do a couple of live numbers there. I've also seen other live clips, but can't remember where. And they always sound great. Mike, I agree with you. The iPod has changed my life and I feel nothing but love for them as a result. And your playlists sound pretty damn good to me.

  11. Cody B says I love playlists. That's how I get to know songs. Listen to an album, pick songs for a playlist/mix cd that includes old and new to me tracks, rotate for a week or so, then a new one. Occasionally I go back to favored playlists and that is usually a treat.

  12. Rawkkiddoh says I have a mini, and it works perfect for me. While I would rather make a mix cd for listening in the car, my ipod saves me every time on 10 mile runs. I cant even tell you how painful it was to go on runs before it with a cassette player.

  13. chandlersford says You know it mike! all those years of cassette tape compilations that I used to do. Carefully considered for order, dynamics and no way of rearranging unless you started one side all over again. We lost that with the one click sort and shuffle listening patterns. I'm a great believer in being selective and considered. We used to share, swap and produce these selections with covers usually montage or an edited photo cut to size. Ah nostalgia isn’t what it used to be! So yep - Yippie for the considered playlist inducing Nano! It's like your very own desert island discs (A radio show in the UK) where celebrities choose the playlist to be stranded with. Byrds is a real must. I couldn’t really go a week without some Beatles - despite the over exposure factor (for the last 40 years). And no summer’s day would be complete without some Paul Rodgers! We don’t often get brand names that become synonymous with the item (Hoover the carpet) but iPod's are part of popular parlance now and rightly so - they are more about lifestyle than functionality and a lifestyle based around music has to be good!

  14. Lady Miss Ian says Great idea, Mike. Like Rawkkiddo and Chandlerford said, it is kind of like the cassette tape challenge. You've got "x" number of minutes (or with the pod, bytes) so, whatcha gonna put on there? It's a good challenge. I think once I get my new laptop up and running, I'll be back on the playlist bandwagon. As for that Byrds video - yah! Two words - Hair and Moustaches!

  15. chandlersford says Hey, nothing wrong with hair and moustaches! or even hairy moustaches! good in the winter! itchy in the summer! I wonder how many songs have been written about hair? Almost cut my hair by CS&N, Hair the musical...

  16. fistula spume says I usually keep it all sorted by albums, mixes, or genre. Oh, and podcast. I keep a seperate playlist for that to keep them in order. I have a friend with a 40GB iPod and he has his completely filled up. He says he doesn't have time to sort the songs he puts on there. He just adds willy nilly. One idea I like is he actually uses that ratings thingy. When he comes across a song at random that he likes he makes it 4 stars so when he plugs back in he can sort by favorites and pick out the tracks to make mixes from there. I don't want a giant iPod though. Perfectly happy with my 6GB mini. I need that size because I listen to so many podcasts throughout the day and they can take up huge amounts of space.

  17. El Monko and Son says Rocks Off just might be the best Stones song.

  18. phils says I have a 30 gig but it is full. I must admit sometimes i miss of the beauty of albums because i am always listening to something new, torrents mean that downloads are so quick i can add 100+ songs a week. But I never just listen on shuffle, I either pick a playlist on-the go or listen to whole albums. That is something that is missing nowadays with the advent of the ipod, people listen to tracks not albums as they are supposed to be heard in their entirerity and that is something I really enjoy.

  19. Mike the Knife says Yeah, you right, dermahrk. I also recall those live Byrds segments. And thanks for the playlist props. I do have to say that my Pod selection is far more eclectic than what I noted above, but it IS, as I told chucky, all killer - no filler... Sensible approach, Cody. If only I took the time for regular rotation. It's more of a dribble-in thing with me. I'm sure a 10-mile run would be painful for me under any circumstance, Rawk. But music always lightens the load, don't it? I think some of youse guys have already gone on at length about the mix-tape as romantic overture, gift, in-car necessity, party favor, etc. Yeah, chandlersford. It was arduous work that may be Podded out of existence. It IS sort of a game, Lady Miss Ian. The iPod Challenge. I like it! Yo, fist. The complexities can be mind-boggling, and, like your pal, we all have our ways and means. You might be right, El Monko. It's one of my faves, up there with "Jigsaw Puzzle," "Sway," "Soul Survivor" and "Moonlight Mile." I've listened to "Rocks Off" over and over, and every time, I hear something new and intriguing in the arrangement. For the production aficionado, headphones rule! Too true, phils. I did a posting about the death of the album a month or so ago that resulted in a lot of insightful responses and might be worth looking up on my MOG page. Or not.
