WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Family Matters

I was listening to Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins over the holidays, and getting the occasional zap from the haunting harmonies provided by the Watsons. It started me thinking about the thrilling vocal blend that family genetics can produce. You can hear it in recordings by the likes of Tim & Neil Finn of Crowded House (and before that, when they were both in Split Enz), the Everly Brothers, the Roches, the Proclaimers, the Carter Family, the Cowsills, the Judds, and so many more.I’m gonna disregard stuff like Natalie Cole’s ghost duet with her late father, and cases like Oasis, where the Gallagher brothers aren’t so much about voices in harmony as they are about personal disharmony. There is just an extra oomph to siblings or a parent and child singing together. And I’m sure there are some serious musical dynasties and family acts that I’m not remembering but that are worth a listen.Meanwhile, here’s a clip of wayward Tim Finn rejoining his brother Neil and band on the occasion of Crowded House’s 1996 Farewell to the World concert in Sydney, Australia. They happen to be singing one of my favorite songs, and doing a pretty good job of it.

  4. Mike the Knife says Seems lahk them country folk are prone to musical inbreeding - if you know what I mean.

  5. ivylander says Thanks for jogging the memory, Spike. There's also (ahem) Nelson, as well as the Andrews Sisters and Andy Bey and the Bey Sisters. A side note on Paul Hester: He makes a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in a mid-80s would-be "Local Hero" movie called "The Coca-Cola Kid," starring the intense Eric Roberts and the sumptuous Greta Scacchi. Actually, Tim Finn has a slightly larger part. They play a session band who play a Coke commercial written by Tim. The commercial's one of the funnier moments in the film. Just a heads-up for Split Enz/Crowded House/Finn Brothers completists.

  6. Jess Horrible says Mike, I hate mog mail, so I am responding here to your comment about The Knife. I think you will like them... they're weird electronica, but actually very listenable. They won a Grammi in Sweden last year. Check 'em out.

  7. Mike the Knife says Thanks, Jess. I'm on it. And yeah, ivylander, I really enjoyed "The Coca-Cola Kid," which, I believe, was around the time that Tim Finn hooked up with Greta Scacchi. (Not to get too "Entertainment Tonight" on ya.) And I forgot that Hester had commited suicide. Sad, especially after watching that wonderful clip from the "farewell" show.
