Sex Music for Sex People

Artist:
Whenever I muse upon the ideal sonic backdrop for boudoir play (as in, doing the horizontal mambo, making the beast with two backs, gettin’ it on, etc.), my mind wanders back to the most incredibly erotic sex scene in the David Bowie-Catherine Deneuve horror film “The Hunger†-- the vampire lesbian-on-vampire lesbian action that, um, goes down to the elegant, angelic strains of “The Flower Duet†from Delibes’ opera “Lakme.â€I don’t believe that I’ve ever actually made love to anyone while “The Flower Duet†played in the background. I have a vague recollection of a college tryst with a lanky blonde English major who put a copy of Ravel’s “Bolero†(shades of Dudley Moore and Bo Derek in “10â€) on the turntable in her dorm room. I think the record skipped half-way through and kept skipping for another half-hour, although we didn’t notice.
Zero 7's Simple ThingsThese days, my standbys for romance and seduction are obvious, but time-tested and beautiful listening: Miles Davis’ jazz classic “Sketches of Spain†with exquisite orchestrations by arranger Gil Evans; anything in a bittersweet vein by the late, great Brit singer-songwriter Nick Drake; “Avalon,†the quintessential late-night/slow-grind/deep-macking album by Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music; “The Composer of Desafinado, Plays†and “Wave†by the Brazilian bossa-nova legend Antonio Carlos Jobim; and my current go-to selection, the “Simple Things†CD by soulful British studio group Zero 7.Certainly, this sort of thing is a matter of personal taste -- and circumstance. Different musical strokes, and all that. Anyone is welcome to chime in with their favorites. If two people are brought closer to comfort and joy thanks to our recommendations, it will be worth it.
