Too Much! (Or Not Enough?)

Posted over 3 years ago

In a recent post, Dale - fittingly Trusted MOGger, fabricator of the EMCD label, and notorious purveyor of intoxicating sounds - came up with some vintage live tracks by British new-wave standard-bearers The Cure. It was some early stuff, circa the Seventeen Seconds album, including a compelling take on "In Your House." And I was well chuffed that Dale unleashed it upon us.

The good news: With the advent of the Interwebs, no cultural artifact seems to be too out of reach today - and this material was sweet nectar for the Cure-aholic. Seek and ye shall find - and stream, or download, or share. The bad news: There just might be too much stuff in general; we have a galaxy of it on MOG, and that galaxy is expanding every day.

Have I reached the saturation point? Will I be overwhelmed? Will you? How do you wrestle with it? How do you sift through it all?

I need some answers, but I'm exhausted. If you'll excuse me, I'd like to take a nap. (My "Lullaby" - the extended version - will be courtesy of The Cure.)

Could it be that Robert Smith of The Cure had so much data in his head that it exploded?

Ah, Mixed Up. That came out just as I had returned from my mission, so I was happy to dive into it. I grew more accustomed to this version of "Lullaby" than the version from Disintegration.

And thanks for the shout-out, Mike. ::blush::

There is a certain bit of faith that the mog synchronicity will steer me to the things i need to hear, and that the bulk of it that I don't hear will go down as unnecessary. Ignorance is bliss. You can't lose what you never had. Etc.

I organize it all with technology - APIs linked back to private recommendation engines, the links themselves are stored in bookmarking technology rolled in 1998, and I'm even toying with the idea of combining machine listening in to the whole thing.  Of course, most of it is vetted through a long standing subscription to Rhapsody ... where I see if the talent in question has more "going on" or is merely the thing of the moment, or worse yet - a one hit wonder.  I do this al through the magic of multitasking - with the Rhapsody on the go option, and a trusty little Zen V.

On Mog I like to trim/expand the Trusteds as necessary - for example, do they overload with too many posts too often - how much time do they spend on each post, am I learning something new besides just hearing something (new or old) ... sometimes I unadd them, but more often then not, I filte the notifications in to appropriate baskets inside Gmail, so that the cream, and only the cream, will always rise to the top.

Some Moggers are more Trusted than others - for example, I try never to miss an M of K post, or poebegone, or many others that will remain nameless, for fear of expanding their egos... (named Moggers notwithstanding) ... ;)

    Cheers,

    Van

KoriLinc: Why, thank you! (Re: Robert's 'do - I'd say "Too much...product.")

Dale: This long one is also my favorite version. It's just the right length for dreaming. As for giving you your props, they are deserved, man.

Oatmeal: Sounds like existentialism more than faith, but - like beauty being in the eye of the beholder - philosophy is in the brain of the cogitator. ;-)

van: Ah, precision! I'd expect no less from you. Although I'm into skim milk rather than cream, that's probably a function of my Californian health consciousness. And I appreciate the trust, and will try to keep my ego in check. Uh-oh. Too late.

Perfect extended mix for the mellow part of a late October dance party in the privacy of one's own home.

I think perhaps Robert's head has floated away from his body in the that picture. We all know his hair is a symbiotic entity attached to his head, anyway.

This is a perfect remix. Just perfect. I think the term drifitng away on memory bliss was invented for this - Who did it?

I think his hair is an antennae system - not unlike the big array at Jodrell Bank - which captures the sounds he  then makes for us.

This was the only Cure album I had for years, I never really listened to their true output. I think that Robert Smith actually remixed this one with help from ex-Bomb The Bass guy Mark Saunders (if Discogs.com is to be trusted). It was a great early introduction to electronic music for me.

vannatta: Don't forget the gluten chicken!

Jonh: I thought it was Smith with an assist, and Oatmeal (sort of) confirms the assumption. The remix is a beaut, ain't it? And good theory on the hair. Until proven otherwise, I'll be going with that story.

Oatmeal: Well played on the creds. I assume that you've heard more from Cure-land, but, if not, there are many treats in store for you.

darmuzz: In other words, I somehow did a Halloween post without consciously realizing it. Now, that's scary!

LOVE this version. I can hear spiders crawling on the ceiling!

Regarding the other matters, I am a bit of an obsessive in general, which in this case works to my advantage. I spend 90% of my online time on MOG. In MOGgers I trust. So that way I can sleep erm, one hour more :)

About MOG in specific, I usually follow notifications of posts that I will think I'll have something to say, interaction! If I get a notification for, say, a country post, I won't read it, 'cause it's a genre I don't like and have nothing to say about. Same with bands I don't like, unless the MOGger is a friend of mine. I am strict! :)

My friend and I are convinced The Cure are following us.  Must be a sign to check out their music!  When my friend and I are hanging we always seem to see their music videos or last night we heard them on the radio.  They do have some rather cool music videos!
