So what inspires your MOG love? And why? What gets you to jump onto a fellow MOGger's thread? What kind of post elicits a comment from you? Need to express solidarity with someone else who just "gets" a favorite artist of yours? Compelled to swap anecdotes or answer a query? Why do you come back here to read, listen, look, post and comment, day after day, week after week?
Inquiring MOGs want to know!
(And to encourage you as you contemplate these weighty questions, click on the Cheap Trick classic "If You Want My Love" or listen to the video clip for Aussie band Cut Copy's neo-wave techno-delicacy "Feel the Love.")

I only comment on threads that have Cheap Trick posts. My record proves it. I'm CBW, and I approve of this post...
i only read things that have the CBW trademark.
I'm CBW and I endorse this remark...
hah. that was quick.
MOG's become like my morning paper, and it's usually still laying on the table late at night. actually, it kind of lays there all day so when i feel like procrastinating i'll scan it.
no particular themes. this is the only one where i'll let emails hit me and let me know blog titles, to see if it's worth a look (to procrastinate further). since my goal is to procrastinate, i'm always rooting for something good, whether it's news, reviews, music or just some BS from people like CBW.
it's truly a music related network and i recommend it to friends (mostly musicians and artists) all the time. without offensive pop-ups and actual content worth reading, listening to, or watching, since i do music for a living it's a mainstay in my daily ritual. there's a ton of places that try to reel you into their world, but this one seems to have worked on me.
As it happens, I'm Mike the Knife, and I approve of both contrabandwidth and Robin Danar.
c.b.w.: I "Surrendered" to the greatness that is Cheap Trick oh-so-long-ago.
Robin: As statements of MOGger purpose go, that pretty much says it.
I like to get reminders from Moggers about new stuff coming out -- and the occasional oldie that I have not thought about for awhile.
Two recent examples: I forgot the new Carrie Rodriguez CD was out -- so I went and bought that, and since the review had no music, I posted a song. Also, I enjoyed listening to the new Verve songs posted today.
Sometime I remind myself about stuff I already knew about - I missed Julianna Hatfield last night on Leno, even though I had posted something about it (I listend to Michelle O on C-Span Radio). So, since I reminded myself, I watched the replay on The Tonight Show website (if she has ever looked better, I'd like to know when -- go check it.)
So that's just a day in the life of my Mog.
On the slightly more serious note, I post with who ever will respond to my smart ass remarks, or I sometimes actually offer discourse. When I joined Mog, I wondered how long it would take for me to tire of talking about music, so far it just feels like my world is expanding as far as musics concerned and I just don't get tired of it.
I always check the most discussed, and then go from there, depending on my work load.
Mog is my cigarette. When most would light up, I check in here. Keeps me sane through out the day. Although that sanity is probably in question once I start typing.
funoka: MOG is a real cultural alarm clock/day-timer for me too. The fashion-forward MOGgers help me stay ahead of the curve, while the archivists remind me to revisit the great sounds of the past.
c.b.w.: Well, fellow smart-ass, I'm with you on all that. I continue to be enthused with MOG and the discourse herein, a couple of years down the line. And it's folks like you that keep it stoked.
Why do we have to have a reason to Mog? I am(not the mogger I am), therefore I Mog!
And I MOG, therefore I am.
Too true, August. No reason needed. Just an inclination.
"MOG is a real cultural alarm clock/day-timer for me too. The fashion-forward MOGgers help me stay ahead of the curve, while the archivists remind me to revisit the great sounds of the past."
That sums it up for me too Mike... I read my trusted MOG posts, but getting me to post comments come from those I feel a real affinity for, that is how I spread the love - but certainly, that comes for me, from carefully thought out posts, comments - even if I don't agree with my fellow Moggers all of the time, most of them are sincere ... and that makes for one hell of a community.
Wish I had even more time to post...
Cheers!
Van
van: Always a pleasure to have you check in when time allows.
I am because I am.
Aug. said it there is no rhyme or reason, I just do when the post speaks to me.
Well, I obviously don't Mog as much as I used to, but when I was Mogging a lot, it had to do with finding people who liked the same music I did, knew about music I didn't, and were willing to comment and "talk" about it as a community. As for what catches my eye? I don't think there is a definite pattern. Some things just get my attention and others don't; some I've just learned to trust and read most of their posts.
I am: D'accord.
Zeroskilz: Appreciate the drop-in. You're most welcome whenever you stop by, and I certainly enjoy checking out your posts, too. It's edu-tainment!
the voices inside my head tell me what to say Mike
Wow, Kevin. Me too. "Must. Crush. Enemies." Uh-oh. Did everyone else hear that?
HAHAHAHA! Contraband...you stole my comment!
weird, let me ask you this then.........are you naked when you mog as well, only wearing cowboy boots with lotion on the insides? Did I just say too much?
<<<<SPPPPLATTTSNORFHAHAHAHA>>>.that sound was a mouthful of my beverage hitting the monitor! And no silly, you didn't say too much! What flavor lotion?
cocoa butter of course!
Now, I'm scared. I just heard the immortal words of Buffalo Bill from "Silence of the Lambs": "Put the lotion in the basket."
HAHAHAHA! I wonder what flavor lotion that was? (and what was that song he was playing when he tucked his private bits into his nether-regions and did that bee-you-ti-ful butterfly-transformation dance in the mirror?)
no, its put the lotion in the boots!
but the lotion in the boots makes it so hard to run away, Rawk!
Talk about off-topic. I can't recall the song, ongoingly, but I do know that Bill was played by the great character actor Ted Levine, now best-known as long-suffering SFPD Capt. Stottlemeyer on TV's "Monk." I always expect Tony Shaloub's fussy private investigator Monk to finally realize that the Captain is actually serial killer Buffalo Bill - and have him carted away. Now, that would be a very special episode...
I love ted levine...he was so good as the husband of long-suffering yet terribly famous mare winningham in that movie Georgia...remember? I am a big mystery fan but have neer seen Monk, better Netflix it!
ongoingly: "Monk" is more comedy than mystery, but enjoyable nonetheless.
well, i like a little comedy with my mystery! :-)
Because "I loved a woman who wasn't clean."
I knew this thread was going off-kilter.
RGM, can you hum that tune?
Mike the Knife : Sorry bout' that Mike, but the voice inside of Kevins head told me to.
ongoingly: The clean or un-clean version?
Do I really have a choice? :-)
We always have a choice, don't we?
Choose wisely!
ongoingly, usually its the other people more concerned with running away!
Mike, that would be a precious episode
I comment on people's posts so they won't feel deserted by their trusteds enough to commit suicide, and also so they'll like me a little bit.
I comment on a post when I have something to say, whether it is of value or not is up to the author.
Thanks Spike. The check is in the mail already.
And EXACTLY what D said. The author has no choice.
I comment on posts that directly address the issue of commenting on posts.
I comment on people's posts as part of my 40-year, unsuccessful campaign to get laid.
Last Monday was a Monkday on TV (ooh, those jaunty japesters in TV land), so I've just had a fill of that amusing show, especially when Glenne Headley (pant! pant!) showed up as the Captain's wife. Now you've completely thrown me....a big moustache and less hair has disguised the fact that he played the oh-so-creepy Buffalo Bill??? I shall pay more attention next time.
I Mog because otherwise it's a cold and lonely church that I sit in. Normal people buy 5 or less albums a year. Is there even one Mogger who fits that profile? I think not. And it's a cool crew that fills this church. Just reading the above justifies being here.
Jonh, almost two years ago one of the first MOG comments I ever received was from a Mogger who said, "I gave up on CDs altogether about 5 moves ago," and I duly felt like a dinosaur.
'I just want to hear new music!'
...and hopefully pass some on to other 'users'
xx
I dunno what elicits a response, but the beauty of MOG and Moggers is the unexpected, the educational, the range of taste, the great truth that we are all in our various ways degenerate musicheads. There is ongoing, no bs discussion of important stuff, like the boundries of fair use and copyright, the ethics of bootlegs and non-traditional distribution of music. All this, and reasonably elevated discourse (with examples) of the pains of constipation. MOG delights, stimulates, offends and inspires. What more could you ask for?
RGM: Always!
Rawkkiddoh: Yep. I've been waiting for the stunning realization to dawn on Monk for years.
Spike: We like Spike - an altruist, a music lover.
Dale: Your comments are certainly of value, but who am I to judge? Judge not lest ye be...oh, never mind.
I am: We tolerate comments, smart or smirky. And where's my cut?
Buzz Sellwood: And I respond to those comments out of fear that you won't comment again.
dermahrk: Good luck.
Jonh: I don't know if Glenne's actually a mother, but she strikes me as what the younger boneheads call a MILF. And you have a special place in the pew, my friend. Love beads, incense, safety pins, pork pie hats, plaid shirts, trainers and bling are optional.
Spike: This ain't the La Brea Tar Pits, buddy. ;-)
Neill: You definitely fulfill your part of the compact - and we are appreciative. (The first one's free...)
BerkeleyBob: You said it!
The spectacular twists and turns of this thread offer the best possible example of why I MOG - because it's a free-form cocktail party (sometimes alcohol-free) with some of the most entertaining people I've ever met....
For God sakes!
10,000 philosophers out of work and here Ivy's applying for the job.
Even including you, Chris....
Sure, we can wax poetic together while getting paid half a pitttance.
You're getting paid for this? What did I miss?
I'm on a tenure track.
Well, at least you have job security here....
Not to go off-topic, but ever since 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' Glenne has fulfilled...well, let's just say it involves bodily contact. If you don't mind, I'll just bring to the pew the Gospel according to Jonh.
ivylander & I am: There goes the cocktail party.
Jonh: Hold on. We're back, baby. Pass the honey-roasted nuts. I mean, uh, Glenne Headley sure is a fine actress.
umm...when i can find my keyboard mostly
Thou speakest true, Pimpster!
holly crack bucket batman is this post hot?
isn't this enough explanation mike?
pixie: Hotter than a conflagration started by the Batman's arsonist adversary Firefly! We MOG on. On we MOG.
Moggers just love to talk about themselves and the act of Mogging. I'm no different. Check any of the top zillion threads...You have to go 61 posts down to find someone writing about a song they posted..and that was part of a Cure concert review..
Hilariously enough, a right-wing ideologue who frequently uses MOG for his disinformed knee-jerk political rants just threw up his own "Why MOG?" post. As if. Tres amusant.
I think at some point we've all done it. I know I have. Sometimes its nice to confirm.
Confirm, yes. Conform? Not if I can help it. ;-)
Confirm why we spend so much time doing this..
It's the MOG Love - for oh-so-many of the aforementioned reasons. Feeling it. Knowing it. Showing it, etc.
"right-wing ideologue who frequently uses MOG for his disinformed knee-jerk political rants".
Is that your definition of MOG Love? Cause it sure doesn't sound like it to me. He's MY right-wing idealogue, so zip it.
Now, now, dermahrk. One would hope that freedom of civil expression is the rule here. In fact, I never said that anyone shouldn't use their blog-space at MOG to smear candidates for public office (and those who support them) while extolling their own figureheads. I may not actively address partisan politics on my MOG page, but I'd be loathe to tell any of my Trusted MOGgers - including you and your right-wing idealogue, with whom I share certain musical tastes - to "zip it" because of their political beliefs.
Oh yeah..the back and forth, I like that too.
That's my bread and butter Cody.
Don't forget the jam!
The cool thing about MOG is that there is rarely any biting back. there is little hate and spite here at MOG. Other blogs like to imitate but can never duplicate the authenticity of the MOG community.
I also like threads like this that go on past their MOS freshness date.
If we give it enough time, it might mutate into a screenplay: "There's Something About MOGgy," if it's a comedy; "To Kill a MOGgingbird," if it's a drama.
I only respond to a post if I can be the 75th MOGGER to leave a comment AND only if there is a Cheap Trick song involved. It's a long tedious process but sooner or later a song from Cheap Trick shows up and there were only 74 comments posted so I swoop in and strike while the iron is hot.
:=)
Ha! Time-ly, too.
"One would hope that freedom of civil expression is the rule here."
"Hilariously enough, a right-wing ideologue who frequently uses MOG for his disinformed knee-jerk political rants just threw up his own "Why MOG?" post".
So typical.
Let he who is without sin cast the first slur. ;-)
Your question sure struck a chord, judging by the volume of comments. For me, posting a comment is a way to show support for others' insights -- a way to say thanks that someone took the time to share interesting information I might otherwise have missed.
Jon: I'd agree with that assessment. It takes a few seconds to comment, but the rewards are undeniable.
Although away from the MOS for quite some time. I'll always read/respond to posts that reminisce 'bout old faves, turn me on to some great new stuff (all you EMCD's), or share in the passion that us music heads all have.
Of course if Cheap Trick is involved, a reply is a given.
Meenie: Good to have you lurking about. Even better to have you say your piece. Cheers!
Mike, you did good here. All I can say is "Wow!". I'll have to say that Cheap Trick isn't a known specimen in my artist vernacular. I've heard a few of their tunes here and there and maybe it's time I grow a bit older and pick up a few albums.
Just keep listening, p. There's so much more out there by so many more artists - all worthy.
