Fat Tuesday Trumps Toxic Tuesday

Posted over 2 years ago

Where y'at, everybody? It's Mardi Gras Day, and I'm in no mood to accentuate the negative, even if I am missing Carnival in New Orleans for the second straight year (through no fault of my own). So I'm tossing out Toxic Tuesday like a string of cracked beads or a bent doubloon - until next week when it'll be back like a musical migraine.

Right now, the Crescent City - nestled on the banks of the mighty Mississippi - is popping with parades, parties, and all-purpose pandemonium. Costumed revelers are clogging the streets for the annual pre-Lenten blow-out. On top of that, the New Orleans Saints were just crowned champions of the National Football League, winning the Super Bowl for the first time in the team's four-decade history. And the area continues its (still too slow) recovery from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina and the incompetence of FEMA.

There's always a reason to celebrate in NoLa. But have there ever been so many at once?

Bourbon Street on Mardi Gras Day

In honor of Mardi Gras and my beloved City that Care Forgot, I thought I would listen to "They All Ask'd for You," a number by some of New Orleans' favorite sons, the Meters. It's a sweetly goofy, almost child-like tune that's become associated with Carnival season, heard during street parades, in bars, on local radio, and out windows.

So go ahead. Have the fattest of Fat Tuesdays in solidarity with our brothers and sisters down yonder on Canal Street and Bourbon Street and St. Charles Avenue and Frenchmen Street. You can watch your diet tomorrow.

I was there in 2005 for Mardi Gras - what a great city, great people, and a whole lotta fun.

Gotta be careful with those Hurricanes though.  My only two drink hangover, ever, although they were pretty good-sized drinks.

Madeline: Great minds think alike! Axe away!

Fasted: You know it! I love the grub there - be it Cajun or a spectrum of haute cuisine. And it's a fun fest most times during the year, although I avoid the humid stretches.

funoka: F'sure! I usually stick to my one-beer-a-day routine, even in NoLa. But I have been known to accept a post-dinner shot of grappa at a favorite French Quarter restaurant now and again. That's the delightfully corrupting atmosphere of New Orleans for you.
